1979 PORSCHE 911 SC - HISTORIC RACE CAR

KEY FACTS

  • A highly competitive race-prepared classic 911, which has been finished to a high standard and remains fully road legal.
  • Under the rear engine lid is a 3.0-litre twin-plug race engine, which drives the rear wheels via a strengthened five-speed 915 transmission and a ZF limited-slip differential.
  • Acquired by the seller 12 years ago, the car has been maintained and developed over the course of the past decade at significant cost.
  • As a testament to its performance, this 911 SC has previously secured two SMRC outright Classic Championships.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Built by marque specialist Mike Bainbridge, the car’s tuned flat-six produces a proven 285bhp. Fed by high-performance 40mm PMO carburettors, it also features a Burn Bros twin-plug distributor, 1966 911 steel rocker arms, DC60 camshafts and an MSD ignition system.
  • The gearbox is a strengthened Porsche 915 unit with a tall first gear and short ratios up to a standard fifth gear. This is fitted with Wevo bearings and a spray bar, which is connected to an electric oil pump for improved cooling and lubrication.
  • This track-focused 911’s roadholding abilities have also been enhanced courtesy of a fully adjustable KW Classic coil-over suspension system, upgraded 911 Turbo torsion bars and fully adjustable anti-roll bars and 911 Turbo rear swing arms, as well as a Quaife quick steering rack.
  • Furthermore, the car has ample stopping power to match its improved performance and handling, and is equipped with six-pot brake callipers at the front and four-pot items at the rear, 300mm floating bell front brake discs and an RSR pedal box with adjustable brake bias.
  • To minimise its kerb weight, this 911 is fitted with carbon-fibre doors and plexiglass windows.
  • In line with its motorsport use, the car also features a full roll cage, a Sparco bucket seat and a TRS harness, all of which are fully approved and still in date.
  • This 911 SC will be accompanied by a substantial folder of documents which detail its history and conversion to racing specification.
  • A detailed specification rundown follows this listing.

CONDITION

  • There is no evidence of any substantial damage to the bodywork, and while the seller notes that the paintwork and bumpers have experienced some occasional light rubbing during races these have always been repaired to a high standard.
  • Fully repainted in 2019, the Riviera Blue paintwork is in excellent overall condition, with a few stone chips on the nose, in line with the car’s track use.
  • Inside, the cabin has been fully stripped out as required by motorsport regulations. While the seller notes that the interior paintwork would benefit from some smartening up, it is in fair order. Elsewhere, the controls and switches are all in good condition, and although the quick-release Momo steering wheel’s black Alcantara covering is somewhat worn, this is to be expected given its use during various track events.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical faults.
  • The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 5 April 2013 at 132,980 miles, resulting in a first-time pass with advisories for minor damage to the windscreen and wear to the rear tyres.
  • As the vehicle is classed as Historic in the UK it is exempt from road tax and mandatory MOT testing, although it has been maintained to adhere to MOT regulations while on road.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The most recent routine maintenance was a full service including a fluid and spark plug change, which was carried out in February 2021.
  • As a racing car, this 911 is kept in excellent mechanical health, with its engine oil, gearbox oil and brake fluid being replaced before every other race meeting, while a full suspension geometry setup has been carried out prior to each race.
