1977 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.0 COUPE

KEY FACTS

  • A rare classic sports car, presented in excellent overall condition and benefiting from a thorough refurbishment.
  • Under the engine lid is the car’s original 3.0-litre flat-six, producing up to 197bhp and driving the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.
  • The car has recently undergone a refurbishment at a cost of £4,503.
  • Only available for two years between 1976 and 1977, the Carrera 3.0 is a lesser-seen 911, with just 2,564 examples being built, of which approximately 10% were right-hand drive.
  • This example was featured in issue 177 of Total 911 magazine, where writer Tim Pitt explored the history of the Carrera 3.0.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Bridging the gap between the Carrera 2.7 and the 911 SC, the 1977 Carrera 3.0 was equipped with a naturally aspirated version of the Turbo’s robust Type 930 engine, and featured a number of refinements including an improved cabin heater, face-level air vents and a more luxurious interior with additional sound deadening.
  • This example is finished in the vibrant hue of Minerva Blue Metallic, with Cork (tan) leatherette and plaid cloth upholstery, and was specified with the rare factory sunroof.
  • It rides on the correct set of 15-inch ATS ‘Cookie Cutter’ alloy wheels, which are very smart.
  • The car presents almost exactly as when it left the factory, save for its polished window surrounds and door handles - which would have originally featured an anodised black finish - while the headlamp rings would have been finished in the body colour.
  • This Carrera will be accompanied by a substantial file of invoices and other documents which detail its past maintenance and history, as well as the issue of Total 911 magazine which it appeared in.

CONDITION

  • No known bodywork damage.
  • Having been previously resprayed, the Minerva Blue Metallic paintwork is in excellent overall condition, with only a few very slight blemishes, including fine scratches and minor stone chips on the lower front bumper.
  • Inside, the cabin has been retrimmed, and is in great shape, though there are a few age-related marks including light scratches on the steering wheel rim and a split in the vinyl covering the lower dashboard.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical issues with the vehicle.
  • Now exempt due to its age, the car’s last MOT test was conducted on 19 April 2017 at 93,117 miles, resulting in a first-time pass without a single warning or advisory.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This Carrera 3.0’s most recent maintenance was an extensive refurbishment, which was carried out in October 2018 at 93,158 miles by Porsche specialist Autofarm at a total cost of £4,503. The vendor will provide full details of this in due course.
  • Prior to this, specialist Chris Turner Porsche replaced the fuel tank, battery and fuel injectors in May 2014 at 92,238 miles, and fitted new front brake callipers, hoses and pads in July 2013 at 92,084 miles.
  • Furthermore, the top end of the engine was rebuilt in February 2006 at 91,507 miles by Steve Bull Specialist Cars, who also fitted a new clutch.

SUMMARY

This 1977 Porsche Carrera 3.0 coupe is a superb example of the lesser-seen 1970s sports car. Benefitting from a recent mechanical overhaul and presented in impressive cosmetic order, this rare right-hand drive example would be a credit to any collection of classic Porsches, and will surely attract admiring glances every time it takes to the open road.
