1977 PORSCHE 911 (930) TURBO

KEY FACTS

  • A fine example of the iconic classic supercar, which has been well-maintained following a prior full restoration, and has some cosmetic and performance modifications.
  • Under the engine lid is the 3.0-litre turbocharged and air-cooled flat-six, which drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
  • Both the engine and gearbox have previously been rebuilt, and are still in very good order.
  • The odometer currently indicates 37,478km. However, this is not accurate as it was reset after the car’s restoration at 116,000km, so the total mileage is approximately 153,500 km (95,380 miles).
  • This 911 Turbo was originally delivered to Australia in 1977, where it spent the first 25 years of its life – and where it was also subject of a restoration. It was then imported into the UK and re-registered in January 2003, and was acquired by the seller one year later.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This 930 is finished in its original hue of Silver Blue Metallic over a black leather interior.
  • Inside, the factory-fitted seats have been replaced with more contemporary and more heavily bolstered sport seats, which feature blue piping.
  • The amber indicator and side repeater lenses have been changed for clear units, and the car’s ride height has been lowered for slightly sharper handling and a more aggressive stance.
  • The car’s performance has been enhanced with the addition of a turbocharger intercooler from the later 3.3-litre car, which is accommodated by the larger ‘tea tray’ spoiler engine cover, while an upgraded sports exhaust has been added for a more characterful soundtrack.
  • It rides on a set of 17-inch three-piece Compomotive alloy wheels, with a staggered setup, running 245-section tyres at the front and 315-section at the rear.
  • The car will be accompanied by its original handbook and service book, as well as extensive documentation of its history and maintenance, as shown in the gallery. The original space-saver spare wheel and factory jack are also still in place.

CONDITION

  • No known body damage or corrosion.
  • Fully resprayed during the car’s refurbishment just over 20 years ago, the paintwork is still in very good condition overall, with a few minor blemishes including stone chips on the leading edge of the front bumper, a small scratch on the top of the rear bumper and a mark on the passenger door.
  • The cabin presents very well, though there are a few small marks and signs of wear in line with the car’s age and use, including a scuff on the dashboard and minor marks on the rear seats.
  • The driver’s electric door mirror cannot be adjusted, but otherwise there are no known electrical faults, and there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard.
  • Now exempt from mandatory tests due to its age, the car’s last MOT test was conducted on 12 April 2019 at an indicated 37,219km, resulting in a clean, first-time pass.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This 930 Turbo’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in May 2018 by independent Porsche specialist Tom Ferguson, comprising an oil and filter service, as well as the replacement of the oil cooler with a genuine Porsche part.
  • Prior to this, the fan belt was replaced and the clutch fork was lubricated and adjusted, while the engine oil and filter were changed at an indicated 36,054km.
  • The seller also notes that the delayed ignition cut-off relay was replaced in April 2021.
  • More notably, Porsche specialist Auto Coupe fully rebuilt the engine in September 1999 during the wider restoration, and had overhauled the transmission and differential in November 1997.

SUMMARY

This Porsche 911 (930) Turbo is an iconic classic sports car, presented in very good condition throughout and lightly modified for enhanced performance. It is particularly well-preserved thanks to its early life under the Australian sun, and thanks to its extensive millennium-era restoration, it represents an opportunity to acquire an excellent example of one of the most famous ‘poster cars’ of the 1970s.
