1974 BMW (E9) 3.0 CSI COUPE

KEY FACTS

• This BMW E9 CSI is a superb example of the marque’s luxurious coupe, benefiting from a cosmetic and mechanical restoration.
• It is now powered by a 3.5-litre straight-six with Bosch fuel injection, taken from a later E24-generation 635CSi, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission from the same car.
• Having previously been used on the Isle of Man, which supports its low indicated mileage, this example was imported and re-registered in the UK in 2017.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• Asides from the engine and gearbox taken from the E24-generation 635 CSi, this example remains unmodified.
• It is fitted with what appears to be an original Stereo 8 Radiomobile stereo system.
• The BMW will reach its next owner with its Isle of Man yellow logbook, photographs of the car at various points during its comprehensive restoration, a folder of invoices from previous owners and a comprehensive list of spare parts installed during the restoration process.

CONDITION

• The bodywork on this example is believed to be original, with no accident damage.
• Benefiting from a recent respray in metallic blue, the BMW’s elegant lines present well.
• A gasket on the passenger side rear window has frayed and would benefit from replacement in due course. A scuff is also visible on the driver’s side of the front bumper.
• This example retains its 14in wheels, which have some minor chips and pitting marks, but no significant damage.
• Recently refurbished, the CSI’s maroon leather upholstery is in excellent condition, with the wood trim similarly in very good order.
• No warning lights are illuminated on the dashboard, though the vendor adds that the indicator stalk is loose and not currently working, while the electric windows are also inoperative.
• The most recent MOT test was undertaken on 16 September 2017. The BMW passed on the second attempt, following works to adjust and repair the front and rear lights and secure the battery in place.
• The sold advisory remaining for the rear-view mirror has since been fixed by the seller.
• Due to the vehicle’s age, it is exempt from further MOT testing and payment of the Road Fund Licence.
• A mechanical overhaul was carried out as part of the restoration work. The car’s history file also includes bills from 2011 from a previous owner.

SUMMARY

Combining the chic ‘New Class’ styling of the 1970s with the later mechanicals of an E24-era 635CSi, this E9 coupe is an elegant and charismatic grand tourer. It would be a great addition to any collection, and is ready to enjoy as a summer touring car.
