1972 PORSCHE 911 S 2.4 - 'OELKLAPPE'

KEY FACTS

• A highly original example of one of the most sought-after classic 911s, remaining in its factory colour scheme.
• Its engine is a ‘2.4-litre’ (actually 2,341cc) air-cooled flat-six with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, producing around 190hp, which is driven through the five-speed ‘915’ H-pattern manual transmission.
• Delivered new to Italy, and spending most of its life to date there, only very recently has it been imported to the US.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• For the 1972 model year, Porsche improved the car’s handling balance by shifting the car’s centre of gravity forwards, relocating the dry sump oil tank to ahead of the right rear wheel, which moved more of the weight inside the wheelbase. An external oil filler flap (‘oelklappe’) was introduced, and this feature only appears on 1972 cars before the location was swapped back.
• As a 911 S model it also features a front lip spoiler to improve high-speed stability.
• The car is finished in Albert Blue over a black vinyl interior, which is understood to be the original factory colour scheme.
• The only modification is the installation of a modern but retro-styled Becker Mexico radio.
• Accompanying the car is a Porsche Certificate of Origin confirming its status as a genuine 911 S 2.4, as well as the owner’s manual and original Libretto from Italy, including various stamps from new up until 2012, and some recent maintenance paperwork.
• A period-correct jack and tool roll are also present.

CONDITION

• No known bodywork damage.
• Having been fully repainted around the late 1980s or early 1990s, its Albert Blue finish is in generally excellent condition. Its repaint was completed to a high standard, and the vendor notes only minor rock chips on the hood from usage.
• Inside, the front seats have been re-trimmed with the correct black vinyl, but otherwise the interior is believed to be entirely original, and looks superb.
• There are no known mechanical or electrical faults.

SERVICE HISTORY

• Last serviced in May 2020 at SST Auto in Connecticut, this included rectification of some oil leaks, servicing of the suspension and transmission, and attention to the gear shift linkage. The oil tank was refurbished with new parts and hoses, and new sway bar bushings were fitted.
• Prior to this, there is an invoice on file for an extensive service at a cost of €3,157.36 in 2017 before the car left Italy, and there is a partial service history as shown in the gallery below.

SUMMARY

This Porsche 911 S 2.4 is a rare classic sports car, presented in a period-perfect colour scheme, and with one of the most desirable 1970s specifications. The sought-after side oil filler will no doubt be of interest to discerning collectors, and this 911 also presents in very good order and highly original condition.
