1972 PORSCHE 911 2.4S

This 1972 Porsche 911 2.4S is a much sought-after classic sports car, presented in beautifully restored condition and with the coveted side oil filler (‘Oelklappe’), which is a unique feature for this model year. It is powered by a numbers-matching 2.4-litre air-cooled flat-six engine, which produces around 190bhp, driven through the five-speed ‘915’ manual transmission. Bettered only in performance terms by the motorsport-focused 2.7 RS in period, the 911 S is known for offering driving thrills and usability in equal measure.

First registered on 1 July 1972, this left-hand-drive 911 S spent much of its early life in Italy, before returning to its birthplace of Germany in 1997, where its interior and paintwork were lightly refurbished, with clues hinting towards it being historic Porsche specialists PS Automobile GmbH who carried out the work.

It was then imported into the UK in July 2002 and purchased by a Porsche club member, who secured the 2003 Autobahn Best Display Porsche award with this car at the Independent Porsche Enthusiast Club’s concours event, after which the car featured on the cover of their summer 2003 magazine. Put up for sale by classic Porsche specialists Export 56 in 2005, it was purchased by its second UK owner, before being fully restored in 2012 by Queenswell Coachworks. The car is now being offered for sale by the trade, having been in the dealer’s possession for the past four years.

Today, the bodywork remains in excellent condition, with even panel gaps and flush shut lines across the car. Both the front and rear bumpers have also been replaced with RS-style items, giving the car a cleaner, more focussed look. The smooth, glossy Viper Green paintwork was applied during its restoration and is described by the seller as being free of stone chips and blemishes, appearing to be in great shape. Similarly, the trim, badges, plated door mirrors and door handles all present very well, as do the light lenses, which are clear and free of chips and cracks.

It rides on 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, which present excellently, with minimal wear. All four of its 195/65 R15 Avon ZV 1 tyres are described as being in good condition, with plenty of tread remaining.

Looking to the interior, which was also fully refurbished, the correct black leatherette upholstery covers the seats and dashboard, while the headlining is cream perforated leather. All of the material is in great shape, with no reported marks, scratches or damage. Dark grey carpeting is fitted throughout and is also featured in the front boot. The steering wheel, gear knob and original white-on-black VDO gauges are also very smart, with the only noticeable wear to the cabin being some slight patina on the heater control panel.

Thanks to the fastidious nature of its past owners, this 911 S drives as well as it looks, with its engine being rebuilt by Gant Speed Engineering following the restoration of the body and interior in 2012.

Its last scheduled maintenance was carried out on 29 May 2019 at 59,559 kilometres by specialists Anthony Seddon Racing. In addition to replacing the engine oil and filter, the right exhaust stack was replaced, along with the exhaust gaskets and bolts, while the overrun fuel cut off was also reinstalled. Prior services were carried out in October 2017 by WR Motors, who carried out an oil service and replaced the valve cover gasket, and in February 2016 by Lakeside Classics, who replaced the heat exchanger. The car’s last annual MOT test was held on 8 July 2020 at 59,619 kilometres, which it passed with no advisories after a minor issue with the nearside headlamp was repaired.

Accompanying this classic sports car are its manual and tool kit, plus a comprehensive history file of service history documents and invoices for past work, as well as a CD-ROM with extensive photographic record of the restoration. The seller is also supplying a number of magazines, which document the car’s history, as well as its past tax discs and MOT certificates from 2004 onwards.

This Porsche 911 2.4 S is a stunning numbers-matching classic, finished in an eye-catching colour that has recently seen a resurgence on the marque’s modern GT3 RS models. Particularly desirable due to its unique 1972 design touches and extensive history file, this charming coupe would make an excellent addition to any collection.
