1972 PORSCHE 911 E 2.4 TARGA

KEY FACTS

  • A fully restored example of the classic open-top sports car, which has been finished to a very high standard and in line with its factory specification.
  • Under the rear engine lid sits the 2.4-litre flat-six with mechanical fuel injection, which is coupled to a Porsche ‘915’ five-speed manual transmission.
  • The odometer currently displays 572km, however this is the distance it has covered since its restoration and engine rebuild, and its true mileage is unknown.
  • As a 1972 car, this 911 features an external oil filler flap (‘oelklappe’) which only featured on examples produced in that year.
  • A left-hand drive example, this Targa was delivered new to its first owner in Germany, before spending some time in Japan and then being exported to Australia in 2004.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • The 911 has been fully restored to its factory specification by Skunkwerks, with almost every element of the car being rebuilt, refurbished, refinished or replaced.
  • It has been fully resprayed in its original hue of Light Yellow, and the cabin is trimmed in black vinyl with cloth centres on the seats.
  • Upon disassembly of the car, Rebel Restoration completed the initial steel work, with the tub and all hanging panels media blasted by East Coast Master Blaster, who also blasted and powder coated the various engine covers and trims.
  • Both the engine and the gearbox have been fully rebuilt and have only run for 600km since.
  • The mechanical fuel injection system was rebuilt to S specification by MFI Werks, and the throttle bodies and stacks were rebuilt by Supertec, who also machined the heads to match.
  • Furthermore, new 2.4 E MAHLE pistons and cylinders, DC40 camshafts, a MFI gasket set, a Carrera chain tensioner kit, SSI heat exchangers and an Appbiz Original Ultimate engine sound pad were installed.
  • The Targa roof panel was also restored by Dan Petchel at Cars Inc, while the dashboard was restored by Dashboard Doctor, who also restored the knee pads and ashtray roll.
  • The cabin also features reproduction door pockets from Lakewell and a rear parcel shelf from VGC Reproduction.
  • The car will be accompanied by a significant number of invoices for its recent restoration work at Skunkwerks, and the vendor will provide the car’s next owner with further details of its history.

CONDITION

  • The bodywork has been fully stripped and restored, and the panels are straight and even, with no evidence of any prior accident damage. All panel repairs have been carried out using fresh metal and to a new factory standard.
  • The resprayed Light Yellow paintwork was evidently finished to a very high standard, and is free of any noticeable marks or blemishes, in line with the car’s limited road use since its restoration.
  • All of the exterior trim is present and correct, and the refurbished Fuchs alloy wheels are unmarked.
  • Inside, there are no rips, tears or other signs of damage on the seats, and while there are some small marks on the steering wheel and the lower section of the dashboard, this is in line with the car’s age and use.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical faults.
  • The car’s most recent roadworthiness test was completed following its restoration in May 2021, which resulted in a pass with no warnings or recommendations.

SUMMARY

The result of years of research, skilled craftsmanship and plenty of dedication, this 1972 Porsche 911 E Targa is an exceptional example of the classic sports car. Now fully complete and described as being in fine mechanical health, this car needs nothing other than to be driven, and should make a wonderful companion for warm-weather drives with its Targa roof panel removed and the sound of its air-cooled flat-six echoing through the landscape.
