1972 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 2.7 RS RECREATION

This Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS Recreation is a truly impressive track-focused tribute to the legendary ‘70s sports car, originally built to homologated RS specification for racing in the 1990s Pirelli Porsche Classic Championship. Under the rear decklid is a correct 2.7 RS MFI specification engine with a genuine 7R magnesium crankcase, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Since a restoration process completed in 2014, the 911 has only covered approximately 500 miles.

Built as a 911T in 1972, it is believed that this example was imported into the UK from Germany, and it was re-registered in November 1982. It is understood to have then been converted to right-hand drive, and upgraded at the same time with components from a damaged original 1973 2.7 RS. The suspension and steering items, including 18mm and 19mm anti-roll bars, and stiffer torsion bars, are said to be original and to RS homologated specification.

Having been rebuilt to racing specifications, it was owned and raced by Chares Shaw, who competed with it in several seasons of the Pirelli Porsche Classic Championship in the 2.7 RS class. During this time, it was run and maintained by both Parr and Paragon, two very well-known Porsche specialists. In the late 1990s, the engine was rebuilt, and shortly after this it was used as an exciting daily driver.

The current vendor has owned and enjoyed this special 911 for the past eight years, sparing no expense in its upkeep to date. A full bare-metal restoration was commissioned at marque specialist RS911 just after they acquired the car.

Resprayed in Gulf Blue with black ‘Carrera’ decals, this 911 is an eye-catching homage to the Le Mans Gulf Porsches of the 1970s. As to be expected of a classic car kept in climate-controlled storage, the paintwork remains in great condition throughout. The only blemishes noted are visible in the paintwork above the passenger door handle. The chromework, lights and glass are believed to be original, and have been well preserved.

The vendor adds that during the restoration process, the steel rear arches were cut out and replaced, along with the sills, kidneys and floorpans. Riding on 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, these are in exceptional condition with no kerbing marks.

This 911’s racing provenance is most evident from the pared-back interior. A full roll cage in Gulf Blue greets occupants as they clamber in, with Willans harnesses gracing the sculpted vinyl and corduroy cloth bucket seats. A handful of age-related scuffs and scratches are present, but overall the cabin is in very good order. A fire extinguisher is mounted behind the driver’s seat, while the period Momo steering wheel has a charming patina.

Marque specialist Hillcrest Specialist Cars last serviced this 911 in March 2021, with a regular engine oil service carried out. The vendor notes that during the prior restoration, the gearbox was also rebuilt, and the car is reported to be in excellent mechanical order.

The most recent MOT test was on 8 March 2021 at 6,749 miles. This was a first-time pass, with zero advisories. Shod in matching Nankang rubber all round, these tyres are in great condition with no sidewall damage and ample tread remaining.

The vendor notes that the build of this car should entitle it to an FIA Historic Technical Passport (HTP), which would qualify the car for a range of historic racing or rallying events.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Recreation offers a superb opportunity to acquire a highly usable and storied tribute to one of the most coveted 911s of all time. With gentle use following a cosmetic restoration, this evocative classic sports car is sure to delight its next owner on the road or track alike.
