1972 PORSCHE 911 2.4S - S/T RECREATION

KEY FACTS

  • A fantastic tribute to the legendary 911 S/T, featuring genuine FIA GR4 S/T steel flared wings, and recommissioned in 2017 by leading U.K specialist Prill Porsche Classics.
  • Now powered by a 3.0-litre MFI high butterfly flat-six with Bosch twin-plug ignition, producing around 300hp, coupled to a five-speed 915 manual transmission.
  • Original Canadian delivery, where it was converted to IROC RS spec in 1973 using parts purchased from the Byztek brothers; subsequently spent time in the US and Switzerland prior to UK import and registration in 2017.

HISTORY

  • Originally delivered to Canada, this genuine 911 2.4S is thought to have been ordered for a national executive of VW or Audi.
  • As a 1972 model year car, it originally featured the ‘Oelklappe’ (side oil filler); the result of a significant effort to improve the car’s handling balance.
  • It is understood to have been converted to IROC RS specifications during the 1970s, and was raced locally in Canada.
  • Laying dormant during the 1980s, it was later acquired by Herman Lausberg, who commissioned a restoration and had it modified to S/T Recreation guise using genuine factory S/T wings.
  • It competed in the Tour d’Espana in 2008.

EQUIPMENT AND OPTIONS

  • Currently the car is fitted with original FIA GR4 S/T steel flares both front and rear, an original factory roll bar, 85-litre fuel tank, Heinzmann fire extinguishing system, and with fiberglass bonnet, boot lid, front bumper and rear bumper panels.
  • While it initially had a 2.5-litre engine under Lausberg’s ownership, it now runs a 3.0-litre flat-six with MFI high butterfly fuel injection and Bosch twin-plug ignition, rebuilt by Rennwerke Porsche and which is understood to produce around 300hp. Drive is via a type 915/02 transmission with ‘Nurburgring’ gearing.
  • The cabin specification includes retro-style bucket seats, four-point OMP safety harnesses, a Momo Prototipo steering wheel, emergency cut-off switch and a simplified switchgear layout.
  • In 2017 the car underwent a full recommission by the UK’s leading racing Porsche specialists, Prill Porsche Classics, with some modern US racing modifications removed and the car returned to an S/T Recreation specification. It is understood that the odometer was zeroed at this point. All invoices for the work are included.

CONDITION

  • No known bodywork damage, though panels have been replaced with steel and fibreglass items as described above.
  • Its Tangerine paintwork is very good overall condition, with minor chips and blemishes that you would expect from light motorsport use.
  • The interior has been pared back, but presents very well overall. The bucket seats are in superb order, and the lightweight door cards are also in great shape.
  • The most recent MOT test was on 15 May 2018 at an indicated 216 miles, which it passed after the headlamp beams were adjusted, and having only a minor advisory regarding slight play in the anti-roll bar link pins

SUMMARY

Around 25 genuine S/T 911s are understood to have been built, and the genuine cars come with asking prices north of £700,000, so it is easy to see the appeal of a fastidiously built recreation like this car. Many Porsche road cars have been modified to racing specification to compete in modern race/rally events, but very few such cars have competition provenance spanning several decades. This Porsche is bound to appeal to keen drivers and classic racers alike and is a great candidate for participating in historic racing series or for use as a thrilling fast road car.
