1972 BMW (E9) 3.0 CS

KEY FACTS

  • A stylish 1970s coupe from the golden era of the ‘New Class’ design language, enhanced with Alpina wheels, GAZ suspension, and a CSL-inspired body kit.
  • Its engine is the 180bhp 3.0-litre M30 straight-six engine on twin carburettors, and is coupled to a three-speed automatic transmission.
  • Initially delivered within its home market of Germany, this is a globetrotting example that has also spent time in Japan and Dubai. It is now in Australia, registered in Queensland and used weekly by the owner.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Finished in Polaris Silver over Red leather, this E9 now rides on iconic 16-inch Alpina wheels, and its bodywork is enhanced by a CSL-inspired front valance and boot lid spoiler – plus waist line stripes in black.
  • It rides on GAZ Gold fully adjustable suspension.
  • All four wheels are fitted with Michelin tyres.
  • Inside, the cabin has been fully re-trimmed in Italian leather, along with new carpets.
  • The original suspension and original wheels/tyres are also included in the sale.

CONDITION

  • Fully resprayed in the original Polaris Silver colour, the bodywork is generally in very good condition; however some small areas of rust are visible under both doors, and the underside of the bonnet, so could benefit from rectifying. There is also slight damage to the front air dam valance, so the fibreglass could be fixed and resprayed at the same time.
  • New rubbers were fitted around the windows, and the car is supplied with new top door rubbers.
  • The sunroof does work but the owner advises it rubs slightly, so needs minor adjusting or repositioning.
  • The interior has been fully re-trimmed in Italian leather, with new carpets fitted throughout. Its new leather includes not just the seats, but the parcel shelf and sun visors. New black carpets have been installed in the cabin as well as the boot.
  • The dashboard pad and console present very well with no cracking in the wood above the glove box, which is rare for this model.
  • All electrical items work, from the ice cold air-conditioning to the original radio, electric aerial, and all windows and lights.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • Over the past two years the owner has gone through the car, first focusing on the mechanicals and getting the car running perfectly.
  • Mechanical work alone stands at over AU$6,000 with elements including a reconditioned power steering box, new bushes throughout, new engine gaskets and seals, all filters and fluids, fuel pipes, ignition system, plugs, leads and an overhaul of the electrical system.
  • The owner brought the car to Australia in December 2020, going to renowned BMW specialist RX Automotive who undertook a majority of the work listed.
  • The engine bay was also cleaned thoroughly and the cam cover and airbox were repainted, and the wiring was tidied up.
  • Mechanically the car is in excellent condition with the entire driveline devoid of any NVH issues with seamless tractability in the power delivery of the 3.0-litre engine and smooth shifting from the automatic transmission.
  • Suspension and brakes are in excellent condition with GAZ Gold shocks offering excellent road handling and comfort.

SUMMARY

This car has been refurbished over the past few years by a passionate British ex-pat car collector who brought the car from Dubai to Australia. Recent works carried out were completed in March and April 2021 as the owner had no intention of selling the car; however another car has come along which the owner had been waiting to get, and this car has to go to make space. BMW E9 coupes remain sought-after 1970s classics, and this particular car is ready to be thoroughly enjoyed as-is, or to have the next owner continue the CSL evocation theme to add further upgrades.
