1970 PORSCHE 911 S 2.2 TARGA

KEY FACTS

  • A cherished example of the classic open-top sports car in excellent condition, with the same owner for the last 31 years.
  • In the rear sits a 180hp 2.2-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine, which drives the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
  • Originally delivered to the US in Canary Yellow, the car was subsequently repainted into white during the 1980s, and has been in the care of the vendor since 1990 after being imported to the UK and re-registered with the DVLA.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • The chassis number confirms this car left the factory as a 1970 model year Targa with the range-topping S specification engine.
  • The car is believed to remain original, barring the colour change during the ‘80s, and the fitment of a Toad alarm system.
  • A new Targa top was fitted during 2014, and a full engine rebuild was carried out in 2004.
  • During their 31 years of ownership, the vendor has covered around 10,000 miles, and states that they loved every moment of driving this 911 S.
  • Included with the car is the original Porsche owner’s manual, a copy of the V5C, and numerous invoices from the vendor’s ownership. There are also some period invoices from the 1990s and some limited paperwork from the car’s time in the US.

CONDITION

  • There is no prior known damage to the bodywork.
  • The paintwork is in good condition, showing relatively minor wear and a light ‘patina’ in keeping with the car’s age. Photos of the underside show some surface rust underneath the car where paint has flaked away.
  • The chrome bumpers, grilles and other trims exhibit mild pitting and dulling, but still look smart and all appear to be complete.
  • Inside, the cabin of this 911 S remains presentable, with some creasing and wrinkles in the seat covers, but no heavy wear or damage to the upholstery.
  • The aftermarket steering wheel and gear shifter are slightly worn with age and use, but the original dashboard is still in good shape, and houses a later period Panasonic head unit.
  • There are no known electrical faults, and no warning lights present.
  • The most recent MOT test is dated 4 September 2020, and shows a clean pass with no advisories noted at 58,270 miles.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The latest service took place during July 2020 at 58,174 miles and was carried out by PR Autos. This work included a standard oil and filter change, along with a replacement fan belt being fitted, and the brake calipers being cleaned and fitted with new seals.
  • Prior to this, the car received attention in September 2018, August 2017 and June 2017, with the fuel pump, ignition rotor arm, and distributor cap and leads being replaced during this period.
  • In August 2016, a new clutch was fitted, along with a clutch cable, heat exchanger tube and new vacuum hoses, alongside a full service.
  • The engine was removed and rebuilt during 2004, with a reconditioned crankcase and new bearings fitted throughout.
  • The vendor reports that the car does drop a few spots of oil occasionally, though this is extremely minor.

SUMMARY

Delivering a characterful no-frills driving experience, and bags of 1970s style; this Porsche 911 S 2.2 Targa benefits from significant investment in mechanical refurbishment and maintenance during the vendor’s ownership. It is wonderfully usable and enjoyable as-is, or could form the basis of a sympathetic cosmetic restoration should the next owner wish to bring it up to a superb standard.
