1970 PORSCHE 911 E 2.2

This Porsche 911 E 2.2 is a smart example of a superb classic sports car, which offers a rev-happy engine in a lightweight package, and which is finished in a vibrant period-correct hue. Under the engine lid is a 2.2-litre air-cooled flat-six, producing around 155hp, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer reads 57,566 miles, though this is not believed to be the correct mileage from new.

While it originally left the factory with the steering wheel and pedals on the left, and was originally delivered to California, US, this 911 was converted to right-hand drive around 20 years ago. Its engine has also been changed, though it is of the correct type with mechanical fuel injection. The present keeper has owned the car for the last 17 years.

Today, its bodywork and paint are reported to be in good condition, having been resprayed in November 2017 when the odometer showed 41,510 miles. Its period-correct Speed Yellow finish presents well, with only relatively minor blemishes around the panels. There is some bubbling and surface corrosion around the bottom left corner of the engine lid, some small cracks in the paint around the scuttle panel, and minor chips and superficial marks elsewhere as shown in the gallery. The light lenses are likely original, and the front items have hairline cracks, while there is some chipped chrome plating around the left tail light. Overall though, this classic 911 looks the part, and is a car you can actually take out and drive without worrying about getting the odd stone chip.

Inside, the re-trimmed front seats look superb, finished in black with houndstooth cloth centre panels, and showing no visible wear or discolouration. Much of the rest of the interior appears to be original, including the dashboard and the VDO gauges - although the speedometer may previously have been replaced given a change in recorded mileage. The vendor reports that the clock does not fit perfectly, and also that he has a new under-bonnet carpet set on its way from the US, but otherwise the cabin trim is presentable, and would be a great place from which to enjoy weekend tours or longer road trips.

The last scheduled maintenance was carried out in November 2019 with 54,100 miles showing on the odometer. This was an engine oil and filter change at Autohaus Hamilton in Chatswood, New South Wales, and also included renewal of the clutch plate. Prior to this it was also serviced in March 2019 and July 2018, with the latter incorporating a rebuild of the distributor. Four new Koni shock absorbers were installed in 2017, along with new wheels, and its rebuilt engine was fitted in 2009. At that time, the odometer reading on the car showed 96,114 miles.

Last roadworthiness inspection was on 10 September 2020, which it passed with no warnings or alerts. The tyres were fitted in July 2020, and have only covered around 2,500 miles, so they remain in excellent condition. The vendor notes that he has a detailed spreadsheet of all maintenance and even fuel purchases relating to the car since December 2010.

This Porsche 911 E 2.2 is a pure and engaging classic sports car, which has a wonderfully clean and original style specification, and which is reported to be in very good mechanical order. It is reported to be a great driver’s car, with the engine pulling strongly on the road, and with the steering, brakes and suspension all well sorted. It would make a great addition to any collection, and is an iconic classic that is ready to be enjoyed as intended.
