1969 PORSCHE 911 S 2.7 - RS EVOCATION

KEY FACTS

  • An outstanding custom build, based on a genuine right-hand drive 1969 911 S, reimagined in the style of a 1973 Carrera RS with a raft of bespoke features.
  • Its engine is a 2.9-litre air-cooled flat-six, with a competition-prepared 7R crankcase, ‘S’ cams and a 10.3:1 compression ratio, mechanical fuel injection coupled to an upgraded 915 five-speed manual transmission with sprint ratios and a Quaife ATB differential.
  • Owned by the seller for the last 28 years, this car was refurbished and upgraded to RS type specification in the 1990s, and within the last four years it has been fully restored to a superb standard, with all major work being undertaken by marque specialists
  • Its suspension and geometry is currently set up for a compromise between road and track use, but it could easily be adjusted to suit regular fast road driving or more track focused.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • An original 1969 911 S, this car is an original UK-delivered right-hand drive example, which was acquired by the current owner in 1993, already having been modified for racing. Following extensive discussions with the renowned Josh Sadler of Autofarm, the decision was made to update the car to Carrera RS style specification, with the intention of being competitive in the Porsche Club GB hillclimb/sprint series of the time, while remaining completely usable on the road.
  • Its initial refurbishment and upgrade in the late 1990s included a rebuild of the metalwork with new fuel tank support, rear duck tail, and extra chassis strengthening.
  • The car had a more recent total body restoration on a jig completed in 2018, with the shell subsequently taken to SPL in Dudley for dip and e-coat before going to Spray Systems on behalf of Tech9 for a full respray in Porsche Gulf Blue, finished off with Carrera RS graphics.
  • Inside, the car has been trimmed with discreet safety preparation for competition use, with rear seat delete, installation of a full Safety Devices roll cage, electric plumbed-in fire extinguisher system, and electrical isolator. A pair of Recaro Pole Position bucket seats were fitted, along with Schroth racing harnesses, with a five-point item for the driver and four-point for the passenger.
  • The dashboard remains original, though with the addition of cut-off and fire extinguisher buttons while there is a period-correct Momo sport steering wheel. There are also lightweight door panels, lightweight carpet and a new headlining, while in the front boot is a tower strut brace, plus the 100-litre endurance fuel tank with its central filler cap.
  • Its original 2.0-litre engine was swapped for a custom motor built by Autofarm in the late 1990s and rebuilt by the same mechanic in 2017. This is a 2.9-litre (2869cc) unit featuring competition-prepared 7R crankcases, 93mm Mahle barrels/pistons, ‘S’ cams, a 10.3:1 compression ratio, RS injection pump and distributor, hydraulic tensioners, SSI heat exchangers, and solid engine mounts. It is equipped with a Hayward and Scott custom exhaust silencer to keep within circuit noise limits.
  • The running-in process for the original engine rebuild was a trip to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and back. The car has covered approximately 1,000miles miles since the 2017 engine rebuild, with just under 240bhp and correct fuelling recently shown on the rolling road
  • There is a lightened flywheel and a competition clutch, while the original 901 gearbox was changed to a 915 transmission. This has been rebuilt with sprint ratios on 3rd, 4th and 5th gears, along with a Quaife ATB differential giving 70mph at 3600rpm in fifth gear. During the recent restoration completed between 2017 and 2019, the gearbox was checked and refreshed by Porsche specialist Mike Bainbridge, and fitted with a new clutch and upgraded oil lines.
  • Through Tech 9 Motorsport, Porsche wiring specialist Kroon provided a full new loom that incorporated the original 1969 tachometer and fuse boxes into the correct harness for the RS specification motor. The four connectors in the engine bay are unique to the 1969 S model and are no longer used, but the bracket remains in place. Kroon also reconditioned the CDI unit, and records are included of the full electrical system. The indicator light units have been replaced with lightweight versions.
  • The car rides on genuine Fuchs alloy wheels, staggered in size with 15x7 at the front and 15x8 at the rear. The front brakes have been upgraded to later 911 Carrera 3.6 items.
  • Its chassis setup features later model alloy rear suspension arms, as well as Weltmeister front and rear anti-roll bars, and Turbo rear torsion bars and front steering arms. The suspension was also lowered; and with all components refurbished and re-plated or powder-coated.
  • In 2019, the car was corner-weighted and aligned by Tech9 in 2019 for fast road/track use. The front corner weights are within 5kg left to right. Its total weight with 50 litres of fuel and an 80kg driver is 1076kg; giving a 950kg dry weight split 40:60 front:rear.
  • The car is currently set up biased towards track use with 1.7F/2R negative camber, 2mm front toe-out, but with road-going Toyo tyres and raised from the track height setting.
  • If the next owner wishes to use this 911 mainly on the road, the seller recommends raising the ride height 10-15mm and reducing the front toe-out. There are also solid engine and gearbox mounts fitted to eliminate axle tramp from track tyres, but these could easily be reverted to the supplied standard mounts if preferred for road use.
  • Alternatively, if mainly track use is in mind, then the recommendation adjustments would be to lower the ride by 10-15mm and fit dedicated racing tyres. The car also comes with a spare thicker rear anti-roll bar, which promotes oversteer, which is useful for slow-speed tight and twisty hill climb events. Harder NGK B8EVX spark plugs are also recommended if used mainly at full load. The car comes with the original alloy wheel nuts, as the seller has always preferred the currently fitted steel items.
  • Accompanying the car is extensive documentation of its maintenance and restoration history, with invoices showing the substantial financial investment in this car’s unique specification and setup, as illustrated in the gallery below. There is also a detailed DVLA ownership history tracing back to the original owner.
  • Several consumables and track spares come with the car, including those specifically mentioned above.

CONDITION

  • The bodywork of this 911 is in superb condition, following a full jig-mounted renovation undertaken in 2018 by Tech 9, incorporating new floors, front inner wings, and door hinge panels to replace corrosion. A new roll cage was installed at the same time. This is in addition to the 1990s restoration work, which included new kidney bowls ,sills, a rear cross-member, and original Porsche bonnet , doors, front wings and correct flared rear wings. It also retains the chassis strengthening that was carried out at this time.
  • Once the bodywork fabrication was completed, the shell was then taken to SPL in Dudley to be dipped and e-coated, before being sent to Spray Systems on behalf of Tech 9, where it was given a full respray in Porsche Gulf Blue and finished with Carrera RS graphics.
  • Today, the Gulf Blue paintwork remains in excellent condition. While the bodywork fit is very good, the seller also notes that the bonnet would benefit from further alignment to perfect the panel gaps.
  • Inside, the original dashboard and other elements are in good order, and the RS style interior features added in the 1990s are also in great shape. There is no significant wear to the Recaro bucket seats, while the period-correct Momo steering wheel has a charming ‘patina’.
  • While the speedometer is working, the trip meter and odometer have been inoperative for around 500 miles, which is understood to be due to a broken plastic internal gear. Several specialists are capable of fixing this fault in the UK, but potentially long lead times mean the seller has chosen not to have this done.
  • The car is exempt from mandatory MOT testing on the basis of age. The last test on record was on 8 May 2010 at 45,367 miles, which resulted in a clean pass.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This 911 has been regularly maintained by the owner throughout their time with the car, to keep it in fine mechanical order, with annual oil changes at the very least. In November 2020, the engine oil and gearbox oil were renewed.
  • On the advice of MFI guru Neil Bainbridge, the injection pump’s warm-up regulator only runs one thick washer, to avoid the risk of influencing fuelling when warm - though the second is included within the spares box. The cold-start solenoid is also currently disconnected, to avoid potential excess richness, but is easy to return to standard if required for very cold weather driving.
  • The car has proved to be extremely reliable, with the owner noting that the points slipped once, and that the MFI thermostat threw its circlip once, but otherwise there have been no issues.
  • Its 2017 engine rebuild by Autofarm was carried out by the same mechanic who originally built the 2.9-litre motor in the 1990s, and it is reported to be in excellent condition.
