1969 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 2.7 RS REPLICA

This Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Evocation is a wonderful tribute to one of the most coveted homologation specials, which is in very good order and ready to relish on the road. Under the engine lid is a 2.7-litre air-cooled flat-six, producing around 200bhp, which is coupled to a 901 type close-ratio five-speed manual transmission with a Centreforce clutch. The odometer indicates 45,889 miles.

The body shell left the factory as an original 1969 Porsche 912, finished in the Light Ivory colour. Understood to have been in the US from new until 2015, this classic sports car was given an extensive conversion to a 911 Carrera 2.7 RS style specification that was completed in 2005. Owned by Vintage Rallies founder Rich Taylor for the next 10 years, it was subsequently sold and shipped to the UK, where it was re-registered to join The Brunt Collection.

Its 2005 conversion was carried out by specialist PAR Porsche in New York, with the most obvious change being the fitment of steel RS flared arches, as well as an RS front bumper and rear ‘ducktail’ engine lid. A set of 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels was also fitted. The body was finished in the period-correct combination of Grand Prix White with blue lettering, and the centre ‘petals’ of the alloy wheels were colour-coded to match.

The 912’s original engine was removed, and in its place was installed completely rebuilt and upgraded flat-six from a 1973 911 T. Line-bored and with a shuffle-pinned case, the engine’s oil feed circuit was updated and fitted with a 930 Turbo oil pump. High-performance JE Pistons were used, along with Pauter con-rods and a micro-polished crankshaft, while correct 2.7-litre ported and polished cylinder heads were installed. The engine is fed by Weber 40 IDA carburettors and a high-flow Holley fuel pump. An MSD 6200 electronic ignition control was installed, as were K&N air filters, Club Sport engine mounts, a 911 S oil tank and remote front oil cooler, and a dual-exit stainless steel exhaust system.

It features a revised suspension and steering setup, with Carrera front strut assemblies with new inserts, new rear shock absorbers, and an adjustable front strut tower brace. There are Weltmeister front control arm bushes, adjustable rear spring plates, front and rear torsion bars, and steering rack spacers, plus 930 Turbo tie rod assemblies. Braking is by larger Carrera 3.2 type front discs with 944 Turbo callipers, and with 911 S vented discs and callipers at the rear. There are also stainless steel braided brake hoses throughout.

Today, its bodywork remains in superb condition, with no damage or dents in any of the panels. The classic Carrera 2.7 RS appearance was refreshed in 2010 with a full respray carried out by Van Alphen & Sons in New York. All of the light lenses were changed to European specification units as part of the 2005 conversion, and it was fitted with black ‘horn’ grilles and black window trims. The 15-inch Fuchs alloys are in great shape, and the blue graphics around the body also look pristine.

Inside, the original cabin was upgraded with lightweight RS type door cards with fabric pull straps, while the front seats were swapped for more modern Sparco competition bucket seats. The rear seats are thought to be the original items, and these have been left in place to make it a classic sports car that can even accommodate the family. Ahead of the driver, a period three-spoke Momo steering wheel is fitted, which has a charming patina, while some of the vinyl trim across the dashboard has started to lift. The headlining was renewed in 2005 and still looks superb, as were the carpets. At one point, a Safety Devices roll cage and Alpine head unit were fitted, but these are no longer present.

While it has received routine oil changes by The Brunt Collection’s in-house mechanic, the car’s last specialist maintenance was carried out by GT One in May 2019 at 44,770 miles. This included a 6,000-mile interval service, renewal of the engine oil and filter, fresh spark plugs, brake fluid, and replacement of the fuel breather pipes and oil cooler seals. The handbrake, gear lever assembly, and both front wheel bearings were also adjusted, a new fan assembly was fitted, and the car was treated to four brand-new Pirelli P6000 tyres; all at a total cost of £5,337.

In August 2015, the car visited Jaz Porsche for maintenance upon its arrival in the UK, when its rear light lenses were replaced and front side lights were rewired. Two new front tie rods were also fitted, and the front wheels were put through a re-alignment.

A raft of invoices are also in the history file from Autosport in Connecticut, dated from November 2005 at 38,352 miles through to December 2011 at 42,273 miles, which was the workshop that looked after the Porsche during Rich Taylor’s ownership.

The most recent MOT test was on 10 March 2021 at 45,911 miles, which resulted in a clean pass once the headlamp beams were adjusted. All four Pirelli P6000 tyres are still in great shape, having covered only around 1,000 miles since being fitted.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Evocation is a superb homage to one of the most recognisable and exciting classic collector cars, with a faithful aesthetic and numerous period-correct features. Available at a fraction of the cost of the genuine ‘Rennsport’ model, this is arguably no less thrilling to drive on the road, with a well-engineered 2.7-litre specification and discerning upgrades to enhance the ride and handling, and benefiting from a recent cosmetic refresh.
