1968 PORSCHE 911 SWB

KEY FACTS

  • A wonderful example of the early short wheelbase 911, which has been extensively restored and lightly modified – now with similar performance to the 911S of the period.
  • Under the engine cover is the air-cooled 2.0-litre flat-six, which is fed by dual Weber carburettors with electronic ignition. Tuned to produce around 148bhp, this drives the rear wheels via a ‘902/0’ four-speed manual transmission.
  • As a 1968 model, this example represents the final year of short wheelbase 911 production.
  • In total, it is believed that only 473 US-market base model 911s were produced for 1968, with this car being number 115 of that limited number.
  • This appealing classic 911 was imported into the UK in 1996, where it formed part of a private collection, before being acquired by the seller’s family in 2015.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This 911 left the factory finished in Ivory White over a black interior. While it was previously repainted in Sulphur Blue by its previous owner, the car has since had an engine out full bare metal respray back to its original Ivory colour.
  • In addition, and applied by the same marque specialist Impact Bodywork, the period-appropriate matt black racing stripes and side decals add a racy touch.
  • All the car’s brightwork has been anodised to the correct specification by early 911 specialist Nick Moss.
  • It rides on a set of 911S-specification 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, which have been fully refurbished – also by Nick Moss – and are pristine.
  • Nearly all of the car’s mechanical components have either been refurbished or replaced. This included the engine, gearbox, the rebuilding and tuning of the Weber carburettors, the installation of an electronic ignition system, fully rewired and new loom, replacement of the clutch and master cylinder, the suspension components, Koni shock absorbers, new vented braking system and a Dansk exhaust system.
  • Inside, the cabin has been fully soundproofed and retrimmed using Southbound components. The beautiful sport seats are also supplied by Southbound and retrimmed in black hide and period houndstooth fabric.
  • A black leather-wrapped Momo Prototipo steering wheel has also been fitted, along with 911 RS-style door cards.
  • The car will be accompanied by a substantial folder including all invoices, photographs of the restoration, and component list. Together with its stamped service book, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, complete tool roll and the correct Bilstein jack.

CONDITION

  • Any panels changed during the body restoration were replaced by genuine Porsche parts; the body panels are all in excellent condition, and the car’s body shell shows no signs of damage.
  • Fully resprayed to a high standard, the Ivory paintwork is very smart indeed, with a smooth and glossy appearance around the car and only a few stone chips on the bonnet, in line with the car’s road use.
  • Described by the seller as being in good overall condition, the fully retrimmed cabin presents particularly well, with the only noticeable blemishes being some slight creasing on the driver’s seat’s outer bolster, minor scratches on the steering wheel’s leather-wrapped rim and patina to the black finish on the speedometer gauge surround.
  • There are no known mechanical faults. While the interior clock occasionally loses power, there are no other foibles with the electrical items or switchgear.
  • This 911’s last MOT test was conducted on 18 May 2021 at an indicated 76,846 miles, which it passed with no advisories after the offside front headlamp’s aim was adjusted.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The car’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in March 2021 at an indicated 76,846 miles by specialist Precision Porsche. A minor service, this included an engine oil, oil filter and brake fluid change, along with replacement of the fuel hoses.
  • Prior to this, a service was performed in April 2017.
  • Fully rebuilt in 2016, all of this classic 911’s mechanical components have either been replaced or refreshed, as detailed in its history file.
  • This included a full mechanical engine overhaul and a gearbox rebuild, as well as the replacement and refurbishment of the braking and suspension components, including the brake callipers, discs and pads, the suspension dampers and all of the rubber bushes.
