1968 PORSCHE 911 L COUPE

This 1968 Porsche 911 L is a stylish classic sports car, which has just received extensive recommissioning and refurbishment. It is equipped with a 2.0-litre flat-six producing around 130bhp, which drives the rear wheels through an engaging five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 15,306 miles, though this is not warranted.

The short-wheelbase 911 L was a limited-run car, with just 499 understood to have been produced, and was effectively a ‘federalised’ 911 S for the North American market. A number of these cars were handed over in Germany as ‘tourist delivery’ cars with owners initially using them on the continent, and it is believed that some may have in fact stayed in Europe.

Accompanying the vehicle is a verification letter from Porsche GB confirming that the car was manufactured in June 1968, complete with the optional Koni dampers, halogen lamps and a leather steering wheel, before being delivered to Schmidt & Koch in Bremen, where it was subsequently sold on 4 July 1968.

The car has since undergone extensive re-commissioning, and a complete cosmetic overhaul. Since being imported to the UK, the vehicle has reportedly spent much of its time in dry storage and has been in the hands of the most recent private keeper for eight years. Although there is little documentary evidence, the owner reports that extensive restoration work was carried out to the bodywork prior to his ownership. At some point in the past, it has also been fitted with a replacement period-correct 2.0-litre flat-six.

The bodywork is reported to be in excellent condition, with the vendor noting the Slate Grey paintwork was resprayed in late 2020 as part of the re-commissioning work. It now presents with minimal wear, having benefited from dry storage and very limited use. The other body trims present as they should, while the vehicle rides on a set of pristine 15-inch Fuchs-style alloy wheels.

Inside, the cabin has been completely re-trimmed with materials supplied by Southbound in Hampshire and Moto Trim in Woking, including new red leather seats, door panels and carpets. The seats are in superb order and is in excellent overall condition, as is the steering wheel. All of the switchgear components have been checked, with the vendor noting the car has no electrical faults.

The last routine maintenance was undertaken in January 2021 as part of the car’s re-commissioning, where it was fitted with a new fuel pump and ignition coil, along with new rotor arms and caps, new leads and points, and overhauled carburettors.

The car is fresh from an MOT test on 29 March 2021 at an indicated 15,306 miles, which resulted in a clean pass. The previous MOT test 11 days earlier resulted in a fail highlighting issues including a leaking oil pressure sensor unit, lighting issues and a faulty tyre due to damage to the inner wall. These faults have now been rectified and the sensor unit replaced, matching tyre sourced, and other minor defects rectified, resulting in the issuing of the new MOT certificate. The wheels are wrapped with Dunlop tyres, which are reported to be in very good condition.

Accompanying the vehicle is a folder of restoration invoices and the documentation from Porsche GB confirming the car’s original specification.

This Porsche 911 L is reported to be a very good example of a desirable classic sports car, which has benefited from a sympathetic re-commissioning. It could be a great introduction to classic Porsche ownership, or an interesting example of a rare model to add to an existing collection.
