1965 PORSCHE 911 SWB

KEY FACTS

  • An excellent example of the short wheelbase 911, with a charming colour scheme and a few tasteful modifications.
  • It is powered by the 2.0-litre air-cooled flat-six, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission.
  • The original build was completed on 22 November 1965, and the car was sold new at Feet Eichel VW in Modesto, California.
  • It was refurbished in 2017 and inspected in 2018 by 2.0L Cup champions Historika Classic Porsche in Ipswich, where the vehicle has also been serviced in recent years.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Factory features included a ‘Webasto’ heater, a wooden dashboard and a Blaupunkt stereo, which is still in the cabin.
  • It is finished in Sand Beige paintwork, which was the original factory colour, with a black leatherette interior with Houndstooth inserts.
  • While standard style seats are included in the sale, a set of ST bucket seats is currently fitted, which are accented by houndstooth cloth centre panels, and which have four-point safety harnesses.
  • Aftermarket Fuchs wheels and a Racemark steering wheel are also installed.
  • Its original owner’s manual and toolkit and jack will accompany the vehicle, along with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a factory Kardex copy, a raft of maintenance invoices and a spare wheel.
  • The original steel wheels with polished hub caps, seats, shock absorbers, and wooden steering wheel are also included in the sale; should the next owner wish to convert the car back to a standard appearance.

CONDITION

  • There is no known bodywork damage.
  • Its resprayed Sand Beige paintwork is in very good order, with just a few stone chips on the front bumper noted. Some light scratches can also be seen on the chrome body trims.
  • The two-tone bonnet flags are professionally applied vinyl, so are easily removable.
  • Inside, the aftermarket bucket seats from 2020 are in great shape, with no wear or damage. The headlining and carpets are also unmarked.
  • There are some light marks on the steering wheel, stereo and ignition surround.
  • The original stereo is currently inoperative.
  • Its most recent MOT test was on 10 August 2018 at 75,152 miles, which was a pass with one advisory to monitor slight play in the front lower suspension component ball joint, which was subsequently changed.
  • The car is exempt from mandatory testing on the basis of age.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • Its most recent service was in June 2021 at 72,000 miles, where technicians at Historika Classic Porsche changed the engine oil and filter.
  • In March 2020, the engine oil, filters and brake pads were changed, before a 2.0L Cup exhaust was fitted alongside Bilstein shock absorbers, new tyres, brake pads, Fuchs wheels, the ST bucket seats and a new Racemark steering wheel.
  • The engine oil, filters, and bulbs were changed in May 2019.
  • Prior to this, the car was restored in 2017 and with further mechanical improvements in September 2018.
  • The Kardex history shows evidence of regular servicing at Porsche Car Pacific in Burlingame, California between 1966 and 1967, up to 11,422 miles.

SUMMARY

This Porsche 911 SWB is a fantastic early example of the breed, with a smart colour scheme and which has been maintained by 2.0L Cup champions Historika Classic Porsche. Presented in excellent condition throughout, it would make a desirable addition to any garage. While the next owner may wish to keep it in the slightly racier current appearance, it could easily be put back to a more original style with the correct parts that are included in the sale.
