1933 BMW 3/20 AM4

KEY FACTS

  • A very smart example of the first car designed wholly by BMW, benefiting from a total restoration at the turn of the millennium.
  • It is powered by a 20hp 782cc OHV inline-four, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
  • The restoration took place from 1997-2001 and is documented in a folder with many pictures.
  • It has been in the current ownership for 21 years.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • The 3/20 features independent front suspension and swing axle independent rear suspension, using a transverse leaf spring.
  • The car has been restored with smart maroon paintwork, with black wings, and colour-coded painted wheel disc covers.
  • Inside, there is fluted grey cloth upholstery, grey cloth for the door panels, and grey carpeting. A simple three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of the driver, and the inner side window frames feature wood trim.
  • It is accompanied by a repair manual, and a fully documented folder of the restoration, including a list of the parts fitted.

CONDITION

  • There is no bodywork damage. Following its full restoration, it has been parked in a dry garage whenever not in use.
  • Its paintwork is reported to be in good condition. There is a scratch on the front right wing, as seen in the photos below, but overall it still looks very smart despite some 20 years having passed since the refurbishment.
  • Inside, there are some surface marks on the grey upholstery, door cards and carpet, but some of this would likely come off with a deep clean. There is no significant wear or damage to the seat covers, and the headlining is also in good order.
  • All of the electrics are fully functional, with no known faults.
  • The last TÜV inspection was carried out in 2004. Since then, the car was registered on the owner’s collector plate that only requires a TÜV at the point of registration - though this plate is not included in the sale.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The car has been well maintained following the restoration, with oil and filter services carried out within the vendor’s own workshop. The coolant has also been renewed relatively recently.
  • During the current ownership, the brakes have been overhauled, as has the drive shaft. Full inspections have taken place every two years since the restoration.

SUMMARY

This BMW 3/20 AM4 is a very good example of the first car to be designed entirely in-house by the Bavarian marque, and as such has notable significance for collectors. This historically significant motor car presents well following its restoration completed in 2001, and is offered in good running order, ready to impress out on the road or at any classic car show.
