PORSCHE 911 (996) GT3 R ENGINE AND GEARBOX

Launched in 1999, the Porsche 911 (996) GT3 R followed in the footsteps of the 993 RSR. At around the same time, Porsche had announced it was stepping back from full factory works racing, instead throwing its support behind numerous privateer teams. The GT3 R would go on to notch up class wins in virtually every sports car race it entered, including at the 1999 and 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans, powered by a brilliant new water-cooled flat-six.

The 3.6-litre (Type M96/77) engine produced up to 411hp at 8,200rpm, and was fitted with a 43.1mm air restrictor plate to comply with FIA class regulations. The motor used Bosch Motronic 3.1 engine management, and it drove the rear wheels through a six-speed GT2 manual transmission, equipped with external cooling, pressurised lubrication, and a limited-slip differential.

This lot comprises an original Porsche ‘Works’ engine, which was completely dismantled, refurbished and reassembled by Michael Kessels Sportwagen & Mobiler Rennsportservice in 2014. It is accompanied by an original H-pattern six-speed gearbox, which has also been fully rebuilt. Both the engine and gearbox are ‘as new’ with zero operating hours since they were restored.

The engine and gearbox were removed from a genuine 996 GT3 R in 2004, when the car in question was upgraded to the later 3.8-litre RSR specification with its sequential transmission. The items were carefully stored for 10 years, before they were fully stripped and rebuilt by Michael Kessels Rennsportservice in 2014.

With the increasing popularity of contemporary historic racing for these later era GT cars through categories such as ERL (Endurance Racing Legends) and MEL (Masters Endurance Legends), there is now an increasing desire to run original specification cars within the grids. Not only that, but the 996 GT3 R also represents one of the last ‘3 pedal’ Porsche GT racing cars, giving it added appeal for keen racers.

This original ‘Works’ Porsche 911 GT3 R engine and gearbox is in outstanding, fully rebuilt condition with zero hours since the completion of the work. It offers the potential to explore reverting an upgraded 996 racer back to its original GT3 R specification, or else simply have a very useful spares package for an existing race car.
