This Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Junior is a superb children’s car, and a wonderful tribute to the sporting roadster driven to overall victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia road race by Stirling Moss. It is equipped with a 48cc engine, coupled to a centrifugal clutch driving the rear wheels, which can power the car up to a top speed of 15 mph. Braking is by a single disc with a mechanical piston caliper.
An evolution of an existing design by the builder, this 300 SLR is the second of just three ‘half scale’ creations that feature a plaque signed by Stirling Moss himself. There is a Certificate of Authenticity for the plaque, with a photo documenting the signing. The build project was planned last year, and has just been completed. The seller states that the mini 300 SLR should be suitable for most children aged between five and nine years old.
Its chassis is powder-coated steel to a bespoke design, while the bodywork is composite glass-reinforced plastic. The silver paintwork and red ‘722’ livery is a faithful replica of Moss’s Mille Miglia winner, co-driven by Denis Jenkinson. The bonnet and boot lid are both functional, and there are working headlights. It rides on 12-inch steel wheels with pneumatic tyres, finished with three-eared chrome spinners.
The cabin is a great tribute to the original car, with hand-stitched dark blue leather and tartan cloth panels on the seats. The floor is trimmed with grey carpet, and the edges and side panels are upholstered with diamond-quilted leather. Ahead of the driver is a four-spoke polished aluminium steering steering wheel, as well as a plastic aero screen. A brand-new Held helmet, finished to match the car’s livery, is also included.
This Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Junior is a wonderful hand-crafted children’s car, which boasts superb attention to detail, not to mention bearing the authenticated signature of the great Stirling Moss as a finishing touch. It would be a fun addition to any collection of classic race cars or Mercedes-Benz models, but is of course ideal for a junior racing enthusiast to drive and enjoy as intended. A faithful tribute to one of the most recognisable historic sports cars ever built, this 300 SLR can also be customised with another name on the headrest fairing, and with a bespoke number plate to suit the buyer, to make it the ultimate personalised gift.
