This Land Rover is a bespoke Whitbread Off-Road ‘challenge truck’ built up using a WKD Motorsport space frame over a Discovery 1 ladder chassis. It is understood to be powered by a 2.5-litre 200Tdi four-cylinder engine, driven through a five-speed LT77 manual transmission.
Whitbread is a renowned name in off-road competition, green laning, and trials driving, while WKD Motorsport Fabrication is recognised as a specialist in custom space frame designs. This custom truck was therefore built using expertise from some of the most knowledgeable people in the business. It is a stripped-down machine, which is not road legal, designed purely for maximum driving enjoyment off the beaten track.
The Discovery chassis and WKD space frame have been painted entirely in U-POL Raptor, a high-grade durable urethane coating that protects against rust and corrosion in extreme conditions. It is suspended using a Terrafirma two-inch lift kit, with dislocation cones and Venom front turrets. There are also high-articulation ‘Johnny’ joint rear radius arms and a four-link RAC Parts A-frame.
Its brake lines have been extended, and heavy-duty batteries are fitted. The wheels are 16-inch modular steel items, running with 60mm spacers, and shod in a set of Maxxis Trepador 37-inch off-road tyres that have plenty of tread. At the front is a Warn Industries M8274 winch with an uprated Bowmotor ‘2 Plus’ motor and Gigglepin 4x4 housing.
The Defender-style bonnet features quick-release fastening pins, while the engine’s air intake has a snorkel pipe rising all the way up the nearside A-pillar to the top of the space frame. The open cabin is equipped with two plastic bucket seats with four-point harnesses, and non-slip diamond-plate metal floor panels. Behind the cabin is a jerry-can fuel tank system.
It is fresh from a recent full service with renewal of the timing belt, as well as a replacement differential. A new Borg and Beck clutch has been fitted, along with a new clutch slave cylinder.
This Land Rover Discovery Challenge Truck is an immensely capable four-wheel-drive vehicle, boasting remarkable approach and departure angles, along with substantial ground clearance and articulation ability. To enjoy off-road, whether on your own private land, approved green lanes, or in competitive trials events, this exhilarating machine would be a hugely entertaining addition to any collection.
