2019 VW GOLF R

This Volkswagen Golf R is a sophisticated hot hatch, which blends seriously impressive pace with everyday practicality and comfort - it is, according to Top Gear magazine, “one of the best all-round performance cars ever made”. Powering the Golf R is a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four, with 4-Motion all-wheel drive via the seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. This example has covered 10,917 miles from new.

First registered in March 2019, the clear HPI report shows it has just one previous keeper. The seller has owned the car for more than a year, and has covered the vast majority of the mileage to date.

Its bodywork is in superb condition as you would expect from a one-year-old car, with typically excellent VW build quality throughout. It is finished in the Pure White hue, and the paint is in very good order, with only a few small stone chips visible from regular use as a daily driver. All of the light lenses and body trims are in great shape, with the grilles, rear diffuser, wing mirrors, and optional 19-inch ‘Pretoria’ alloy wheels all finished in gloss black.

In the cabin, there is a hard-wearing cloth and synthetic suede upholstery, which is in excellent condition. There are signs of light use on the driver’s seat, but in general the trim presents superbly throughout. Factory-fitted equipment includes dual-zone climate control, heated seats, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and heated door mirrors.

While the body, wheels, and interior all remain in original condition, the larger quad tailpipes at the rear reveal the uprated sports exhaust system that has been fitted by performance specialist RGS Motorsport in Wellingborough. The same company also installed a ‘plug and play’ Stage 1 remap, and an upgraded air filter, taking the power output up to 363bhp. The modifications are all easily reversed, and the car comes with the original exhaust system and air filter.

While the car was due its first annual service in March, this has not yet happened due to restrictions in place around Covid-19. Its first MOT test is not due until March 2022. The wheels are fitted with Continental SportContact tyres in size 235/35 R19 all round, which remain in very good condition with plenty of tread. Accompanying the car is all of the original literature and accessories supplied by the dealer.

Reviewing the latest model at launch, Evo magazine concluded: “With no major flaws, yet a real depth of character and a peerless image, the Golf R is popular for good reason. It’s brilliant”.

This VW Golf R is a superb example of one of the consummate all-rounders, capable of fulfilling duties as a practical and refined daily driver, and yet ready to thrill when the driver wants to unleash its full performance. The relatively subtle upgrades mean this particular Golf R is quicker and more vocal than in its stock specification, but it remains a stylish and reliable hot hatch.
