2017 VW GOLF R

Stretching the meaning of ‘hot hatch’ to its upper limits, this 2017 VW Golf R combines sports car pace with the practicality and comfort that the dependable hatchback is known for. Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four, coupled to the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, via a six-speed manual gearbox – putting the driver in full control of its 306bhp and 280lb ft of torque. The odometer shows 24,400 miles from new.

The Golf R’s powertrain can propel it from 0-62mph in just 5.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph, which is all the more impressive given its relative frugality. First registered in June 2017, the car is now offered for sale by its second owner, who has covered 4,000 miles during just over one year of ownership. It remains under an extended warranty plan until April 2022.

Presented in excellent cosmetic condition, there is no damage to the sculpted bodywork other than one small parking dent on the nearside rear door, though this measures less than 18mm across and is a great candidate for paintless dent removal. Its Deep Black Pearl paint presents superbly and is described by the seller as being in factory-fresh condition. The car rides on the optional 19-inch ‘Pretoria’ twin five-spoke alloy wheels, which are in pristine condition, and are complemented by black ‘R’ branded brake calipers.

In the cabin, black fabric and synthetic suede cover the front and rear seats, all of which is in wonderful condition, with no signs of unsightly wear or damage. The high-gloss black and carbon-effect inlays are in good order, as are all of the buttons and control knobs. Factory-fitted equipment includes heated seats, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, heated door mirrors, and cruise control. The touch-screen media system features satellite navigation, DAB digital radio, and smartphone integration.

This particular car was also specified with keyless entry, dynamic LED lighting, and a glass sunroof, bringing fresh air into the cabin during warm summer days. The seller notes that due to an intermittent issue with the infotainment system, the complete unit has just been replaced under warranty.

Last serviced in  February 2020 by Listers Volkswagen, Stratford-upon-Avon, at 24,348 miles, the car received an oil change inspection, including replacement of the dust and pollen filters. Shortly after this, it had the three-year Haldex oil change and brake fluid change at 24,400 miles. A summary of the annual service history is included below. The seller notes that while there is some surface corrosion on the brake disc hubs, the discs are all in excellent condition showing no signs of needing replacement yet. During his ownership, the battery and infotainment screen have both been renewed under warranty.

Its first annual MOT test was carried out on 10 June 2020 at 24,423 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories whatsoever. The wheels are fitted with 235/35 ZR19 Pirelli P Zero tyres, which were replaced in March 2019. The front items have approximately 5mm of tread remaining, while the rears have around 6mm.

Included with the car are its original books and official service records, as well as a full complement of unused tools, and the space-saver spare wheel and tyre. The seller also notes that the remaining balance of the car’s original service package will carry over to the new owner - valid until 19 April 2021 - covering one major service, as well as the balance of an extended warranty supplied by Listers Volkswagen, which runs until April 2022.

Described by Autocar magazine as “having the dynamic qualities of sports cars that cost many times more”, the VW Golf R is a supreme all-rounder, offering daily-driver practicality and open-road thrills in equal measure.
