2014 LAND ROVER DEFENDER SVX 'SPECTRE'

Far from the average Defender, this 2014 110 Crewcab SVX is one of only seven surviving examples produced by Land Rover and Bowler for the 2015 James Bond film, Spectre. Under the bonnet is a 2.2-litre diesel engine, which has been tuned to produce 185bhp and drives all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The odometer displays just 1,032 km from new.

In total, ten Defender 110s were commissioned in ‘Bigfoot’ specification to serve as transport for Spectre’s henchmen in the film’s dramatic snow chase scene, with each being built in late 2014 in time for filming in 2015. Marked as number nine of those vehicles, this undamaged example was used for drive-by filming, and as such has ‘lived to die another day’.

As well as visual and safety modifications such as its full external roll cage, black front grille and substantial 37-inch off-road tyres, this menacing Defender also features a number of performance upgrades from all-terrain racing pioneer Bowler – including an engine tune, rose-jointed suspension and Bilstein rally dampers.

Understood to be currently limited by electronics to 62mph, this Defender has been spared the rigours of high-octane stunt driving, and is offered for sale in impressive overall condition. While it is not currently road registered, other examples have been successfully registered, and paperwork is currently with the DVLA to progress it for this car.

As a result of its careful use and storage – not to mention a lack of impacts with wingless light aircraft – this Defender’s bodywork remains in excellent condition. The panels present particularly well, with no damage or dents to speak of, while its substantial Bowler wheel arch extensions are also in good order, and add an extra touch of aggression to its already muscular frame. The sinister Santorini Black paintwork is in great shape, and the vehicle’s unique exterior enhancements including its LED roof lights, bonnet rope and WARN Zeon 10-S electric winch make it clear that function is as important as form for any self-respecting criminal organisation. The car rides on a set of 16-inch five-spoke ‘Beadlock’ alloy wheels, which are pristine.

In the cabin, the original front seats have been replaced with highly supportive Recaro items, which are trimmed in black leather and fabric, and are fitted with four-point TRS harnesses for additional safety. While movie cars are often used as a means to an end and can be somewhat abused as a result, this Defender’s cabin remains relatively unscathed, save for a very small tear in the base of the driver’s seat and some slight damage to both of the front door cards. Elsewhere, the cabin is largely standard, though a number of auxiliary buttons and switches have been installed in the dashboard and centre console, and the handbrake has been repositioned and replaced with a hydraulic unit. Given that the seats have been replaced, it is understood that the car’s heated seat buttons are not functional.

Given its low mileage and private use, it should come as little surprise that this star of the silver screen has not required any additional maintenance to date; however, it is reported to be in good running order.

Extensively modified by off-road racing specialist Bowler, this Defender offers enhanced all-terrain capability over one of Land Rover’s standard vehicles, having been treated to an engine tune, as well as an upgraded turbocharger and intercooler. Furthermore, the vehicle has been fitted with rose-jointed suspension components and rally-specification Bilstein shock absorbers, which – combined with its massive 37-inch Maxxis Trepador tyres – give its driver the best possible chance of evading globe-trotting secret agents on even the most inhospitable of snow-covered mountains.

While this intimidating Land Rover is not currently road registered, it was put through an MOT test on 18 January 2017, which it passed without any advisories or defects noted.

It will be accompanied by a raft of documents which confirm its identity and provenance, including printouts of filming schedules, emails between Bowler and Land Rover, and details of its full specification, all housed in an appropriately branded ‘007 Spectre’ folder.

Built by Land Rover and customised by Bowler Motorsport, this Defender SVX represents an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire a genuine vehicle from Bond’s most recent big-screen adventure. While it is sure to appeal to any fan of the franchise or memorabilia collector, this Defender is also an eminently capable and impressive off-road vehicle, and with registration anticipated to be straightforward, it should make a wonderfully extravagant weekend plaything or off-road toy.
