2014 DAX 427 COBRA REPLICA

This DAX 427 is an appealing and faithful recreation of a 1960s MkIII AC Cobra, offering classic styling and old-school performance with more robust build quality. Its engine is a desirable 6.3-litre Chevrolet 383ci ‘small block’ V8, producing approximately 435bhp and 445lb-ft of torque. This power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.

First registered in 2014 after a painstaking build process, this DAX 427 has had three owners from new, including the seller. He has owned and enjoyed the car for a little over a year.

Manufactured by sportscar specialist DAX Cars, the company was the first British brand to make a faithful replica of the original AC 427 Cobra, and in the 1970s had the original designer of the AC Ace – John Tojeiro – on its team to ensure as much accuracy as possible. Having been in business for over 50 years, the brand is adept at fitting a wide range of components from respected OEMs into the lightweight chassis and bodywork.

Wearing a deep metallic Cobra Blue, the paint finish of this DAX replica is in excellent condition. It retains taut shut lines and smooth panelling throughout. The chrome roll-over bars, front and rear bumpers and stainless steel side-exit exhausts are in exceptional condition, with no marring to the finish. Sixties-style period features abound, including ‘Cobra’ and ‘427’ badging. The DAX rides on 18-inch Halibrand replica alloy wheels, which are in very good condition with no kerbing grazes or other damage.

Inside the fibreglass body, the DAX’s tan leather cabin is a truly driver-focused environment. The Momo steering wheel and stainless steel gear knob are in good condition, and there are only minor marks around the interior. The tan leather seats are in good condition with no rips or tears, though there is some light wear and discolouration on the driver’s seat bolster. The metal instrument panel, gauges and buttons are all in good order, while the push-button starter adds a touch of theatre and modernity.

A full service was undertaken by Webster and Lancaster of Watford in May 2020 at 5,522 miles. This entailed an oil and filter service as well as brake fluid change and replacement spark plugs. The clutch was also replaced at this time, with new parts including a clutch pressure plate, clutch plate, release bearing, flywheel and clutch fluid at a cost of £3,000. The radiator system was also drained and flushed through with fresh anti-freeze.

The most recent MOT test was on 1 July 2021 at 5,559 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories or defects noted.

This alluring DAX 427 will reach its next enthusiast owner with numerous receipts and invoices relating to the car’s build. The private number plate seen in the photographs is no longer on the car and will be retained by the vendor. The car wears a set of Toyo Proxes tyres on all four corners, with the rear tyres at around 4mm of tread, and the front tyres with around 2-3mm remaining.

Combining an evocative soundtrack with 1960s styling, and using modern features only where prudent, the DAX 427 is a sure-fire way to get noticed on your local B-road blast or summer road trip. It would be a handsome addition to any collection, and is an appealing diversion to today’s crop of turbocharged and computer-assisted performance cars.
