2012 MCLAREN MP4-12C

KEY FACTS

  • A well-specified example of the incredibly capable supercar, with MSO carbon-fibre upgrades and low mileage.
  • Under the engine lid is a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8, which drives the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle shift.
  • The car has been well maintained from new by main dealers and most recently Thorney Motorsport, with seven documented services.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Finished in silver, the bodywork also features a black contrast roof, as well as MSO carbon-fibre options. There is a carbon-fibre front lip spoiler and rear diffuser, carbon mirror casings, carbon side blade air intakes, and louvred carbon-fibre engine covers. It also has a carbon McLaren badge on the nose.
  • The car rides on the optional ‘Super Lightweight’ alloy wheels with a diamond-cut finish, housing black brake callipers.
  • Inside, the car was specified in a combination of brown leather with black Alcantara. The outer sections of the seats are trimmed in leather, while the centre sections are Alcantara. Most of the dashboard and door panels are trimmed in Alcantara, as are the roof pillars and headlining. There are brown leather accents throughout.
  • The car was ordered with a carbon-fibre interior package, applied to the centre console, door-mounted air-conditioning controls, and the steering wheel spokes.
  • Factory equipment includes cruise control, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, and the Meridian sound system.
  • The car comes with the complete book pack including the original stamped service record, detailing a comprehensive schedule of maintenance from new.

CONDITION

  • Both front wings were recently replaced under McLaren’s 10-year anti-perforation warranty, rectifying the underlying corrosion common on these models.
  • Its silver paintwork is reported to be in generally excellent condition, with minor blemishes on the underside of the door near the paint protection film, very small superficial marks elsewhere as shown in the gallery, and some delamination on the carbon-fibre ‘armadillo’ rear engine cover.
  • The leather and Alcantara upholstery has some minor creasing and other signs of use, but no heavy wear or damage. Its colour scheme is relatively rare, and lends this 12C a particularly sophisticated appearance in the cabin.
  • Its climate control system requires re-gassing, but there are no other known electrical or related issues.
  • A recent service from Thorney Motorsport flagged a few items for attention or to monitor as advisories. Some of these have been attended to; for example the TPMS sensors have been replaced, and the wings have been renewed.
  • The right rear shock absorber will need replacing within the next 5,000 miles, with a quoted cost of around £1,200.
  • The most recent MOT test was on 10 October 2020 at 31,961 miles, which resulted in a clean pass. The 2019 MOT test reported that the windscreen was damaged, but this was subsequently replaced.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • Last serviced in September 2020 at 31,866 miles by McLaren specialist Thorney Motorsport, this included an engine oil and filter change, plus replacement of the TPMS sensors and a new key fob battery.
  • In October 2019 at 31,000 miles, Thorney Motorsport also rectified an engine boost issue by replacing a faulty actuator clevis on bank 1 of the V8.
  • Its previous main dealer service was in February 2019 at 28,817 miles at McLaren Hatfield, comprising an engine oil and filter change, fresh brake fluid, a new air filter and new HVAC cabin filter, plus ECU updates as required.

SUMMARY

This McLaren MP4-12C is a sophisticated modern supercar, presented in very smart condition and with low mileage from new. Maintained exclusively by main dealers and one specialist, it has covered less than 1,000 miles since its last service, and is ready to enjoy on the road. The 12C received rave reviews at launch, as the remarkable solo-brand follow-up to the legendary F1, and still impresses today with its remarkable blend of performance and touring comfort.
