2012 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 110 XS UTILITY WAGON

This Land Rover Defender 110 XS Utility Wagon is a very smart example of the marque’s iconic ‘go anywhere’ 4x4, finished in a distinguished black-on-black factory colour scheme. It is powered by the 2.2-litre DT224 diesel engine producing 120bhp, with permanent four-wheel drive via a six-speed manual transmission. The impressive low-end torque, lockable centre differential, and selectable low-range gearing deliver superb performance for towing and off-road driving. The odometer shows 55,123 miles from new.

As a late 2012 example, this car represents the last iteration of the ‘classic’ Defender that was discontinued in 2016, including the more refined 2.2-litre engine. There are three previous registered keepers, and the seller has owned the car for nearly seven years, covering some 35,000 miles in that time.

Externally, the car cuts an imposing figure, with the panels and 16-inch ‘Boost’ alloy wheels all finished in black. Described by the seller as being in good condition, there are very few marks on the paintwork, and the imperfections include some stone chips to the bonnet, as well as a small patch of surface corrosion within the nearside rear door shut panel.

Adding to the theme of rugged usability, it also features black side protection runners topped with diamond-plate steel, providing added traction for muddy boots, as well as looking stylishly industrial.

Built to the ‘XS’ specification, this Defender’s interior is a step above most other Utility models, with the front and rear seats trimmed in original half leather and rack cloth upholstery. The seats are all in great shape, with no damage and no noticeable wear to speak of. Further factory enhancements include a heated windscreen, air-conditioning and heated seats, making the car more comfortable as regular transport. There are some small scuffs and chips to the plastic trim in places, but generally the interior presents very well.

Its most recent service, including a brake fluid change, was carried out in January 2020 by Land Rover specialist Ongar Bridge Motor Company in Essex. Previous services are noted as having been carried out in 2016 and 2015, with work including an oil and filter change and replacement of the brake fluid. In addition, the seller has had two new steering shafts fitted during his ownership, with the most recent replacement in 2019.

The car’s last MOT test was on 27 September 2019, which resulted in just two advisories. A minor engine oil leak was noted, as was slight wear to the rear shock absorber bushes. The wheels, including the full-sized spare, are fitted with chunky Continental CrossContact all-terrain tyres in size 235/85 R16, which are in good condition with plenty of tread remaining.

Accompanying the car are all of the original books, including the stamped guarantee and maintenance record, as well as numerous old service receipts.

An immensely practical and versatile vehicle, the Land Rover Defender is an automotive institution, with its silhouette alone conjuring images of over-land exploration. It finds enthusiasts among every generation, and will almost certainly remain a collectable yet eminently usable vehicle. A few small areas could be smartened up by the next owner, but this 110 Utility Wagon is ready to continue it its service as a reliable workhorse.
