2009 PINZGAUER VECTOR PPV 6X6

This Pinzgauer Vector PPV 6x6 is a purpose-built armoured military vehicle, which has been designed to transport personnel in some of the most hostile environments on earth – so it surely ripe for use as a hugely capable adventure truck. Understood to be powered by a 3.0-litre VW turbodiesel engine, coupled to an automatic gearbox driving all six wheels, the Vector can climb gradients of up to 60%, despite its kerb weight of 4,400kg.

The odometer displays just 877km, which is not warranted, but may ultimately be accurate given the Pinzgauer’s relatively short operating life. The first units were put into service in mid-2007, but by mid-2009 the MOD had already agreed to withdraw it from duty given poor resilience to improvised explosive devices. Therefore, many vehicles acquired by the MOD saw very limited use.

Originally developed and produced by Steyr-Daimler-Puch, Austria, the Pinzgauer was later manufactured by BAE Systems. The first in-service operating date for this example in certified as 2009, but the precise year of production is not known.

This ex-MOD right-hand-drive 6x6 Vector PPV (Protected Patrol Vehicle) is not currently registered for use on the road, although this should not prove to be too difficult should the buyer wish to take it on public highways. Since acquiring it this year, the current owner has kept it in dry storage.

Given that the Vector is designed to withstand harsh conditions, it should come as no surprise that the bodywork is in good condition, with no signs of damage. The military green paintwork is also in very good order, with only some small marks on the front bumper, and has been largely protected by tan netting.

This is a well-protected example of the Pinzgauer model, with the light lenses and windows all being covered with mesh and slatted guards. This example also features a rooftop swing mount, allowing a machine gun to be installed – although this would likely attract negative attention from the police.

The vehicle rides on a set of six heavy duty 16-inch steel wheels, which are finished in the same green hue as the body and are in good order. They are shod in BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A tyres with Trigard sidewall protection, which have ample tread.

In the cabin, this Pinzgauer is as functional as you would expect, with hardwearing black fabric covering the driver’s and front passenger’s seats and diamond-plate steel panels in the foot wells. As a military patrol vehicle, it also features seating for up to four people in the rear – each with four-point safety harnesses – and with more than enough storage space for kit, weaponry or a substantial weekly shop.

All of the interior trim is in good condition with some general light wear marks and the wide range of interior buttons, switches and warning lights are reported to work correctly.

This Pinzgauer Vector PPV 6x6 is a rare ex-MOD British military vehicle, which provides rugged dependability and true ‘go-anywhere’ capabilities – its impressive approach and departure angles are amply demonstrated in the photo gallery. This is a great opportunity for a collector of ex-military vehicles, but could also be the perfect foundation for a bespoke off-road adventure truck.
