2008 MERCEDES-BENZ (R230) SL600

This 2008 Mercedes-Benz SL600 is a fine example of an exceptionally rare flagship convertible, boasting low mileage and a tasteful factory specification. The pinnacle of Mercedes’ non-AMG SL models at the time, the SL600 is powered by a 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V12, which produces 510 bhp and a gargantuan 612lb ft of torque. The powerplant is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission.

First registered in May 2008, this example represents the final revision of the SL600, with updated styling, more power, improved handling and a high level of standard factory equipment. Now displaying just 26,500 miles on the odometer, it is being offered for sale by its fifth owner, who has enjoyed its combination of comfort and performance for the past five years, covering 10,000 miles during this time.

The sculptural bodywork and Obsidian Black metallic paintwork are both described by the seller as being in excellent condition, with the only mark of note being a scuff on the offside of the front bumper – though this should be easy to repair. Elsewhere, the paint is pristine, with no damage or dents.

The xenon headlights also present well, without any hazing or cracks to the lenses, and all of the body trims and rubbers are in good order. Its 18-inch twin 10-spoke silver wheels are original, although there is some kerb damage to the edges of the rims in places.

Looking to the luxurious interior, swathes of Exclusive Grey leather cover the seats, lower dashboard and lower door cards, while the steering wheel, gear knob and upper areas of the dashboard are wrapped in darker grey leather, creating an attractive two-tone appearance. Burr wood veneer inlays provide an additional air of refinement, and feature on the upper and lower portions of the steering wheel, the centre console and the door caps.

As is to be expected of a flagship Mercedes-Benz, this SL600 is generously equipped, with comfort items including 12-way power seats complete with heating and ventilation, the ‘Airscarf’ system which channels warm air through the headrests, and a Harman Kardon surround-sound system, complete with a six-disc CD changer and iPod interface.

The seller states that there is no damage to the interior trim, and only light wear on the driver’s seat. All controls, switches and electrical items are working without fault, including the power retractable hardtop – which is engineered to fold away in just 16 seconds.

Original, unmodified and well cared-for, the car is in very good mechanical condition. Most recently, it received a full ‘B’ service on 26 May 2020. This included replacement of the engine oil and filter, cabin filter replacement and a brake fluid change. Prior to this, a minor ‘A’ service was carried out in October 2018 at 24,621, and a major or ‘B’ service in July 2015 at 18,906 miles.

Its most recent MOT test was carried out on 12 March 2020 at 26,403 miles as a retest, due to a leaking nearside front shock absorber which was identified during a test just three days earlier. With the offending item having been replaced, the car subsequently received a clean pass, with the tester simply noting the presence of factory-fitted under trays.

The wheels are shod in Pirelli P Zero tyres, which are all described as being in good condition. The 255/40 R18 front tyres were replaced just eight months ago, while the 285/35 R18 rears are four years old. Accompanying the car are its handbooks, tools and even original brochures. Its electronic service records are held by Mercedes-Benz, as is the case with many newer vehicles.

A truly potent yet civilised roadster, this Mercedes-Benz SL600 offers luxury, refinement, and startling performance in an undeniably stylish package. It is understood to be one of just 299 examples of the facelift SL600 built worldwide – making it the rarest of the R230 V12s. Described by the seller as “an iron fist in a velvet glove”, this example provides the best of both worlds, whether you want to turn heads around town or feel the exhilarating power of its twin-turbocharged V12 on the open road.
