2008 LOTUS EXIGE SPORT 240 - MIGHTY CAR MODS

In the world of Lotus sports cars, the Exige is the closest thing to a race car for the road as you can get. However, this isn’t just any Lotus Exige; it’s one of only six special edition Exige S 240 models to come to Australia, one of only three in black, and it has been customised by the Mighty Car Mods crew. Even in standard form, it is a superb driver’s car with a beautifully balanced chassis and steering that bristles with feedback.

However, this car is even better, having been featured and modified in several episodes of Mighty Car Mods (MCM): a genre-defining YouTube show that started with two young guys in Sydney modifying cars on their mum’s driveway, and which is now a worldwide cult hit.

The car in question is a 2008 Lotus Exige S 240 in Sapphire Black Metallic. In standard factory specification this model received a slight power increase to 179kW (up from 163kW) from the Toyota-sourced 2ZZ-GE engine along with a host of other sports car performance upgrades including:

  • Upgraded AP Racing front disc brakes
  • Limited-slip differential
  • Uprated clutch
  • Uprated injectors
  • 240 ECM map
  • Traction control system that let you choose from 11 different settings. One through 10 allow you to control slip; one being the least amount, 10 allowing lots of slip, and the 11th setting being traction control completely off.
  • Cup 255 extended roof scoop pushing air into the supercharger intercooler
  • Black Senosoft interior finish
  • Black leather trim with orange stitching and embroidery
  • Air-conditioning
  • Lotus Sport 240R forged wheels

From here, the MCM crew – with support from Simply Sports Cars Lotus in Sydney – added a host of performance-oriented upgrades worth over $15,000, including:

  • changing to an AIM Electronic Dashboard, which is a Lotus produced item available as a retrofit for the Elise and Exige, which along with replacing the analogue instruments also has lap timing and data logging functions, using satellite GPS
  • adding a harness bar with 4-point Schroth harness belt (factory seat belts have been retained as well)
  • changing to the Simply Sports Cars-designed sports exhaust and intake/induction kit to allow the engine to breath more freely
  • addition of a larger Harrop HTV1320 supercharger with upgraded ECU, while retaining the air-to-air intercooler, netting a total power output of around 190kW at the wheels

With 190kW / 258hp at the wheels in a car weighing around 900kg, the upgraded Exige boasts terrific outright performance, and is a true testament to the Lotus brand’s lightweight mantra. To handle this new-found power, brand new sticky R-spec track tyres were fitted at the front and rear, with the MCM team heading to the Exige’s natural environment, the race track, to sample just how good a modified and well-sorted Lotus Exige can be.

The MCM crew received direct input and support from Australia’s leading Lotus specialist, Simply Sports Cars, who made sure everything was set up and installed correctly. This included a revised, track-focussed, suspension and wheel geometry set up to adjust the vehicle’s rake and wheel alignment.

For the driving enthusiast, there is so much to love about this very rare Exige 240 S. It has been elevated from its already superb factory set up with discerning modifications, while playing a starring role in the popular Mighty Car Mods YouTube show. Viewing the previous MCM episodes featuring this car is highly recommended.

As the world heads towards battery-powered vehicles, this type of sports car is truly the last of its kind: raw, engaging, visceral and focussed on the driver. Best of all, this Exige is ready to relish as intended, and could be fully exploited at any of Simply Sports Cars’ year-round driving events including track days, driver training, tarmac rallies and more. This is an unmissable opportunity to acquire a unique high-performance sports car with a great story to tell.
