2006 MAZDA RX-8 PZ - PRODRIVE EDITION

This Mazda RX-8 PZ is a superb example of the limited-edition model, co-developed by Prodrive and presented in excellent condition. It is powered by a 1.3-litre rotary engine producing 231hp, coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 42,050 miles from new.

This example marks car number 119 of just 800 examples built, only 400 of which were finished in Brilliant Black. The car was first registered in July 2006, and has just one previous keeper on the log book. It has been cherished by its current owner for just over two-and-a-half years.

The PZ edition has drag-reducing wing mirrors, black mesh grilles and a rear spoiler for added downforce. The Prodrive-developed special also boasts Bilstein dampers and Eibach coil springs, with a reduced ride height for improved handling, and an upgraded twin exhaust system. It rides on model-specific 10-spoke alloy wheels supplied by OZ Racing with carbon Prodrive centre caps.

The bodywork of this collectable RX-8 PZ presents with even shut lines and smooth panels. The vendor is keen to point out that it has none of the common rust in key areas that blights less well-cared for examples. This example is finished in Brilliant Black paintwork, which the vendor notes would benefit from a machine polish to remove any swirl marks, but which is otherwise in very good order. The badging at the front and rear has been refinished in matt black, and temporary ‘brows’ have been applied to the headlight lenses. All four alloys present well, sitting in front of red brake callipers.

The cabin of this RX-8 is trimmed with black leather, presenting with only light creasing commensurate with the low mileage, but no damage whatsoever. The interior comes with a plaque behind the gear knob to marque the car’s limited-edition status, and features heated seats, climate control and a Pioneer stereo, complete with a set of JBL speakers and connections that would enable a subwoofer to be fitted in the boot. The vendor notes that the air-conditioning is not as cool as when he acquired the car, so will likely need re-gassing.

The last service was undertaken in November 2020 by the owner, who carried out engine oil and filter change. Similar home maintenance was carried out at the previous service interval, while Hertford Auto Centre carried out a professional service at 31,153 miles.

The vehicle has had the fuel tank and airbag recall issues attended to, and during the vendor’s ownership the front brake discs, pads and callipers have been replaced, as well as a new ignition system and offside rear light cluster. A compression test was also performed by Rotary engine specialist Murdoch's using an OEM Mazda tester in October 2020 at 42,015 miles – recording solid results of 6.8/6.9/6.7 for the front rotor and 6.6/6.7/6.7 for the rear rotor.

The most recent MOT test was on 20 June 2019 at 37,056 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The vendor notes the car will be handed over with a fresh 12-month MOT certificate, with a test already booked for 18 November 2020.

The front wheels are wrapped with Hankook tyres, while the rears have Falken ZIEX ZE914 items, in the correct 225/45/R18 size. The rear tyres present with around 3.5mm of tread remaining, while the fronts have between 2-3mm. Two Falken ZIEX ZE914 tyres with around 4mm of tread will be supplied so that the owner can swap the front tyres to match the rears.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original handbooks, as well as numerous maintenance bills, and MOT certificates. There are also printouts of the online service history from Mazda.

This Mazda RX-8 PZ co-developed by Prodrive is a more dynamic version of an already exciting sports coupe, marking one of just 800 cars produced. Free from the common RX-8 foibles, and with a very recent professional compression test evidencing the strong condition of the engine, this is a clean, low-mileage example that is ready to drive and enjoy.
