2005 TOYOTA CENTURY V12

This Toyota Century is an ultimate expression of Japanese luxury, which remains in very good order throughout. Powered by a 5.0-litre V12 officially rated at 280hp and mated to the later six-speed automatic transmission, this example has covered just 69,700km from new. It was imported to Australia approximately 12 months ago.

With a design language remaining largely unchanged since 1967, this second-generation G50 Century features deep metallic blue paintwork which contrasts beautifully against chrome bumpers and bright metal trim. The paint is believed to be wholly original and is in good condition, with only a few minor clear coat blemishes. The original multi-spoke alloy wheels are each wrapped with Yokohama tyres and feature the original Toyota Century ‘Golden Phoenix’ logo.

The interior is in original and untouched condition, described by the vendor as being “almost perfect”. As to be expected from a flagship Toyota, the fit and finish is superb, and there is very little wear to be found in the cabin, barring some dead pixels on one of the cluster’s digital displays.

Unusually, this model has been specified with optional dark-grey leather seats – rather than wool cloth – complete with heat and massage function. The seats are power adjustable and all heating and massage functions are operational. Deep gloss walnut burr trims feature throughout the cabin and convey a premium feel, and there is no visible wear to any interior surface. The original thick wool carpets and floor mats are in place and in excellent condition, as are the original net curtains in the rear of the cabin.

The rear centre console opens to reveal a plethora of switchgear which controls the functions of each seat, along with entertainment options and a satellite navigation screen for the rear passengers. An unusual quirk that the Century is renowned for is an option for the inside core of the front passenger seat to flip rearwards, allowing for a rear passenger to almost fully recline and stretch their legs forward into the front of the cabin.

In production until 2017, the second-generation Century is the only front-engine, rear-drive Japanese car to feature a V12; an engine configuration chosen for its unparalleled smoothness and effortless torque. This car is reported to be in strong mechanical order, with the last service in August 2020 at JNK Whitehorse Automotive. At this service the engine oil and oil filter were replaced, and the air-conditioning was re-gassed to Australian standard. Unfortunately, the original service history book did not come with the vehicle when imported.

Known as the official state car used by the Emperor of Japan and heads of state alike, the Toyota Century is a desirable expression of luxury and refinement. With an impressive specification and remaining in very good order, this Century would be a fine and fascinating addition to any car collection.
