This limited-edition Renaultsport Clio 182 Trophy marks car number 368 of just 500 models produced for the UK market and is presented in superb overall condition, benefitting from a recent extensive refurbishment and engine rebuild. This Clio 182 is equipped with a 2.0-litre inline-four cylinder engine, tuned to 188bhp, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 69,900 miles.
First registered in September 2005, this Clio 182 Trophy has been with its current keeper for one year, and is now offered for sale to a fellow enthusiast. It was acquired in near-standard specification, but over the last year the vendor has given this car a comprehensive refurbishment and treated it to a raft of performance upgrades. Almost all of the original components replaced – including the rare Sachs dampers – have been retained and are included in the sale.
To the best of the vendor’s knowledge, the car has never undergone any prior accidents, and presents with flush shut lines and smooth panels. The Capsicum Red finish was resprayed on both bumpers, the bonnet, and the door handles in March 2020 at Extreme Finishing in Basingstoke – simply because the original paint was fading slightly.
The headlights and fog lights were replaced with genuine Hella and Valeo items earlier in the year, and are immaculate, while the window glass is free of cracks and chips. The door panel ‘bullets’ have been refinished in anthracite with red Trophy lettering. Its aftermarket 14-spoke 15-inch Speedline alloy wheels are in pristine condition, having been sealed with a Q2 Rim treatment. Performance-enhancing upgrades are also evident, including the Godspeed ‘J hook’ brake discs and uprated Brembo callipers, as well as the lower ride height resulting from the BC Racing adjustable coilovers supplied by Mark Fish Motorsport. A full specification list is included below.
Moving inside, the cabin features lightweight black leather Recaro Pole Position seats, which appear in very good order. The door cards and Renaultsport-badged sills remain in good condition, as do the dashboard switches and key contact points. The gear knob has been replaced with a lightweight alternative, while the rear seats have also been replaced with a K-Brace for improved rigidity and lightness – and the original rear seats are included. The driver has reported no issues with any interior controls or electrics, while no warning lights are present on the dashboard. Again, a complete list of the upgraded interior components is included below.
The last service was undertaken in May 2020 at 66,156 miles, where Renaultsport specialist AW Motorworks carried out an engine oil and filter change with high-grade Millers lubricant, and renewed the gearbox oil. The history shows the cam belt, dephaser pulley and clutch were replaced in April 2019 at 64,120 miles – when the engine was rebuilt.
The most recent MOT test was on 28 October 2020 at 69,843 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with the tester noting only the presence of protective undertrays. The wheels are wrapped in Nankang NS2-R tyres in size 195/50/R15, which the vendor reports are around five months old and present with plenty of tread remaining.
Accompanying the vehicle are the original Renaultsport owner’s handbooks and manuals, as well as a large folder detailing the car’s comprehensive service history, the original toolkit and jack, and a limited-edition Trophy CD.
The Clio 182 Trophy is one of the most celebrated of all Renaultsport models, even winning the ‘Best Hot Hatch of the 21st Century’ vote run by PistonHeads in 2019, which concluded it had “poise and flow that even the (very good) standard car couldn't match”.
This particular Renaultsport Clio 182 Trophy benefits from a recent engine rebuild and a refreshed appearance, as well as numerous modifications designed to make this an even more exciting driver’s car. Marking one of just 500 examples brought to the UK, this is a collectable modern classic that is a thrilling B-road or track day toy, and it could always be put back to standard specification in the future if the next owner so desired.
