2005 RENAULT CLIO V6 255 - PHASE 2

This 2005 Renaultsport Clio V6 Phase 2 is a wonderful example of the marque’s inimitable mid-engined hot hatch, which has clearly been well cared-for by its previous owners. Doing away with the traditional front-engine, front-wheel drive layout usually associated with performance hatchbacks, the car instead has a riotous 3.0-litre V6 engine in the place of the rear seats, which drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

As a Phase 2 version, this Clio V6 produces 252bhp (255 PS) – a notable upgrade over the Phase 1 car – and also features a longer wheelbase and wider track, improving both its handling characteristics and usability. Assembled by Renaultsport at its Dieppe facility, this Clio V6 is one of 191 Phase 2 UK cars to be finished in Illiad Blue and number 246 of only 354 cars produced for the UK market, as displayed on its special edition badge behind the gear lever.

First registered in January 2005, the clear HPI report shows five previous registered keepers on the log book, and the odometer indicates 44,870 miles – making this a relatively low mileage example. This car’s current keeper has owned it for the last two-and-a-half years and has enjoyed some 1,500 miles behind the wheel.

The dramatic wide bodywork and eye-catching paintwork are described as being in exceptional overall condition, with the only marks noted being some very small stone chips on the front bumper. The seller believes that the front wings, bumper, and bonnet have been resprayed to rectify stone chips prior to his ownership, as is common for these cars. It rides on its original 18-inch OZ alloy wheels, which are all absolutely pristine and free of any blemishes.

In the cabin, things are slightly more subdued when compared to the boisterous exterior, but there are still enough signature touches to remind the driver that this is no ordinary Clio. Clad in black suede and leather, the sports seats are in excellent condition, with only mild marks and creasing to the driver’s seat bolster, in line with the age and mileage. The V6’s original body-coloured interior trim is unmarked. While the previous owner has fitted a newer steering wheel from a Clio 197 RS, the original wheel will also be included in the sale, with both having been re-trimmed to a high standard.

Somewhat in contrast to the Renaultsport Clio V6’s hardcore reputation, Phase 2 cars such as this have a number of comfort and convenience features, including climate control, cruise control and automatic xenon headlights. They were also fitted with a six-disc CD changer, linked to six speakers via the Cabasse stereo system, all of which is still present and correct in this example.

As an enhancement to this already very exciting car, the previous owner has fitted an aftermarket induction kit, but the original air box and pipework have been retained and are included with the car.

It was last serviced by Renault specialist SG Motorsport in May 2020, where it received an oil change, new oil filter, pollen filter, front brake discs and pads, as well as having the air-conditioning system re-gassed. Prior to this, general services were carried out in August 2018 (also at SG Motorsport), June 2017, and a far more comprehensive maintenance visit in May 2015 at 41,138 miles. This included the fitting of new timing and accessory belts, a new clutch and slave cylinder, replacement of the air-conditioning compressor, and an overhaul of the front and rear brakes. All of this in addition to the service items of a new air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter, coolant, brake fluid and spark plugs.

The last MOT test was carried out on 7 February 2020, with the car receiving a clean pass with no advisories. Its wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres, which were replaced in September 2017. They are described as being in good condition; with tread depths of 6mm on both rear tyres, 3.4mm on the nearside front, and 3.8mm on the offside front.

Accompanying the car are its original leather document pouch, including maintenance service booklet, warranty and services booklets, owner’s manual, radio instructions and security code, plus its original Renault security system booklet. The seller is also providing a raft of documents covering the car’s history, including past MOT certificates, service invoices and receipts.

Evo magazine summed up the Clio V6 in a retrospective feature by calling it: “One of the craziest cars that Renault has ever built, but one of the most appealing too”.

An excellent example of Renaultsport’s tradition of bestowing electrifying performance and handling characteristics upon its small hatchbacks, this Clio V6 Phase 2 is as eye-catching and idiosyncratic as the day it was launched, and is still in outstanding condition thanks to its previous owners’ attention to servicing and maintenance. It is a true modern classic, and would make a great addition to any collection.
