2005 JAGUAR XK8 4.2-S

This Jaguar XK8 4.2-S is a very well-maintained example of a modern British classic, boasting a rare limited edition specification as well as comprehensive history. Under the bonnet is the 4.2-litre V8, producing around 300bhp, coupled to the six-speed ZF automatic transmission. The odometer now shows 175,500 miles, and the car is being offered for sale at No Reserve.

Revealed at the 2005 Geneva motor show, the 4.2-S model was a limited edition that featured new alloy wheels, darkened rear light clusters, the stainless mesh grille, and revised Jaguar ‘Growler’ badges with chequered flag motifs. The polished door tread plates also featured the chequered flag theme, while the interior was accented by new Elm wood veneer inlays. This particular XK8 is equipped with the optional 20-inch BBS Perseus alloys from the XKR, as well as the Brembo Performance R brake package with cross-drilled discs.

First registered on 5 August 2005, this XK8 4.2-S is one of fewer than 200 examples built in right-hand drive. It has just two previous keepers on the log book, the last one being the chairman of the XK8 Enthusiasts Club. It was acquired by the vendor just over 10 years ago, and he has racked up around 140,000 miles since then, almost exclusively from long-distance weekly commuting from Suffolk to Preston or Bristol.

Its bodywork is in superb condition, with no evidence of any prior panel damage, and with flush shut lines throughout. The paintwork has been resprayed on both rear quarters due to being keyed in the past, but otherwise its Frost Blue finish - unique to the 4.2-S model - is in excellent order. There are only minor age- and mileage-related blemishes, including some marks on the wing mirror casings. Its 20-inch BBS alloys are in very good order, with no kerbing damage.

Inside, the impressive condition of the Ivory leather belies the mileage, with only minor wear on the driver’s seat outer bolster and the central armrest, which could be easily improved with some re-connolising. The door panels and dashboard present well, and all of the Elm veneers are in good condition. Its headlining has started to sag slightly in places, so this would benefit from renewal in due course. An aftermarket TomTom satellite navigation unit was fitted by Tom Lenthall Jaguar, and there are no known electrical faults or warning lights on the dashboard.

The vendor reports that the car “drives beautifully and uses no oil between services”. Its last scheduled maintenance was in July 2019 at 171,411 miles, when a standard 10,000-mile oil and filter service was carried out by Paul Roach Classics. Prior to this, it also had recent services in May 2018 at 167,603 miles and in March 2017 at 162,539 miles, both at Epping Classic Cars. A full summary of the regular servicing is included below.

During the current ownership, all of the brake discs have been replaced, along with the front suspension bushes and subframe mountings. The rear sills have also been renewed, and all four alloys have been refurbished. Two new lambda sensors were fitted, and the transmission oil has been changed.

The most recent MOT test was on 18 September 2020 at 175,349 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with advisories for front tyre wear, slight play in the front lower suspension ball joints, and a deteriorated front registration plate (since replaced). The tyres are described as needing replacement before the MOT next year.

Accompanying the car is the original document wallet and all books, including the stamped maintenance record. There is also an extensive file of invoices and other receipts available to evidence the work carried out.

This Jaguar XK8 4.2-S is a handsome sporting GT, boasting a limited-edition specification as well as several performance and convenience upgrades. Thanks to unstressed motorway use and regular and thorough maintenance, this XK8 is reported to be in fine fettle, ready for many more miles in the hands of its next enthusiast owner.
