2005 ALFA ROMEO 156 GTA - SELESPEED

This Alfa Romeo 156 GTA is a rare and driver-focused Italian sports saloon, which is presented in very smart condition and with low mileage. Under the bonnet is the coveted 3.2-litre ‘Busso’ V6, which sends 247bhp to the front wheels via the Selespeed automated manual transmission with paddle shifters – resulting in a 6.3 second sprint from 0-60mph. The odometer shows just 40,962 miles from new.

While production of the GTA stopped in 2005, this car was first registered in June 2008. The owner has confirmed that the car was in storage with an importer during this time. There is just one previous keeper on the log book, and the seller acquired the car 10 years ago. It has been safely garaged when not in use, and is understood to be one of only a handful of Selespeed GTAs remaining on the road in the UK.

The handsome bodywork is in very smart overall condition, with no recorded accident damage and crisp, even shut lines. While there is one very slight dent above the passenger-side rear wheel, the seller describes it as being extremely hard to see.

Its Alfa Red paintwork presents well, and has a glossy, vibrant appearance. There are some blemishes present, including cracking on the offside of the front bumper, slight gravel rash on the side skirts behind the front wheels, and peeling on the nearside of the rear bumper. As might be expected of a car of this age, there are also a number of stone chips on the nose, some of which have been touched in, and a small scratch on the offside rear quarter panel, between the boot and the fuel filler flap.

All of the window and door seals are in good order, as are the headlight lenses, which are clear, bright and free of scratches. The seller notes that there is slight play in the driver’s side door mirror cover, and that the corner of the offside rear door handle has chipped off, but these are minor imperfections. The car rides on a set of 17-inch ‘teledial’ alloys, which are in generally good condition, save for some noticeable scuffs on the offside front wheel, and would benefit from refurbishment in due course.

In the cabin, the black leather seats are in great shape, with their ribbed centres being mirrored by matching inserts in the front and rear door cards. There is some general wear present on their surfaces, including creasing and discolouration on the driver’s seat bolsters, but this is commensurate with the car’s age and mileage.

The interior trim is in good order, with the dashboard plastics, leather steering wheel and Selespeed lever all presenting very well. The seller does note that the plastic trim surrounding one of the rear door handle wells has developed a slightly ‘sticky’ feel – common in Italian cars of this period, and caused by degradation of the plastic’s coating.

Factory equipment includes a radio and CD player with Bose speakers, heated front seats and dual-zone climate control – though the system may require re-gassing. All of the interior buttons, switches and other electrical items work correctly.

Lovingly cared-for over the years, this 156 GTA is in strong mechanical condition, and the model’s handling foibles have been addressed, with Monza Sport in Ashington fitting a number of transformative aftermarket parts for the first owner. These include Harvey-Bailey shock absorbers, an Alfa Romeo Q2 limited-slip differential, and Eibach anti-roll bars. It also has an Alfaholics stainless steel exhaust system.

Its last oil service was carried out by Italian car specialist Graham Eddy Motori in March 2019 at 40,154 miles, with the front brake pads also being replaced. Prior to this, the car received an oil service and cambelt change in February 2017 at 39,410 miles, and an annual service in July 2013 at 33,365 miles. The seller also notes that the ECU was repaired by a Bosch engine management specialist in Germany in September 2017.

Its last MOT test was conducted on 26 September 2019 at 40,818 miles, where it secured a first-time pass with only one advisory, which noted minor wear in the offside front suspension arm bushing.

The front wheels are fitted with Bridgestone Potenza S001 tyres, which were changed in March 2015 at 35,712 miles and have approximately 6-7mm of tread remaining. At the rear are Hankook Ventus S1 Evo tyres with around 5mm of tread.

Accompanying the car is its original wallet with the service booklet, the Bose sound system guide and owner’s manual, as well as receipts for previous work and services. The original temporary tyre repair kit is also included.

This Alfa Romeo 156 GTA is a rarely-seen Italian sports saloon, featuring the even rarer paddle-shift Selespeed transmission. It benefits from a selection of modifications to bring its handling up to a much-improved standard, not to mention the sports exhaust to enhance the aural character of the wonderful Busso V6. While some minor exterior imperfections could be attended to in due course, this is a well-cared-for modern classic that would make an exciting and unusual addition to any collection.
