This 2004 Renaultsport Clio V6 ‘Phase 2’ is a stunning example of the mid-engined hot hatch, presented in excellent condition and benefitting from a recent overhaul. Mounted just behind the driver is the 255hp 3.0-litre V6, which powers the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The odometer displays just 17,437 miles from new.
Featuring a longer wheelbase and a wider track for improved stability and handling, the ‘Phase 2’ Clio V6 also produced an additional 25bhp compared to its predecessor, making it the most powerful series production hot hatch at its launch in 2003. As with all Phase 2 cars, this example was built by Renaultsport in Dieppe, and is one of only 74 UK-market examples finished in the alluring hue of Black Gold. First registered on 30 September 2004, the car was kept in storage from 2011 until late 2020, when it was acquired by the seller.
Today, the bodywork remains in great shape, with no signs of previous accident damage and straight, dent-free panels. Described by the seller as being in excellent condition, the Black Gold paintwork has a smooth and glossy appearance, with the front bumper, bonnet and front wings having recently been resprayed to a high standard to correct some age-related stone chips. The car has been fully detailed to ensure that it presents as well as possible, and the vendor notes two very minor stone chips on the roof and a handful on the lower side skirts. The vehicle rides on the correct set of 18-inch alloy wheels, which are pristine, having been refurbished in February 2021.
Inside, the cabin presents equally well, with no damage whatsoever to the black Alcantara and leather-clad seats, and only the slightest signs of use including minor creases on their bolsters. Elsewhere, the trim is very smart, in line with the very low mileage. The seller also notes that there is a scratch at the rear of the centre console; however this is a common Clio V6 issue, and is caused by the movement of the seat adjuster. The carpeting is in as-new condition, the floor mat set was replaced earlier this year, and the light grey headlining shows no signs of sagging. All of the buttons, switches and electrical items work as they should, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.
The car’s last routine maintenance was carried out in February 2021 at 17,435 miles by Clio V6 specialist SG Motorsport. A comprehensive recommissioning after its period in storage, this included replacement of the cam belt, water pump, auxiliary belt, crankshaft pulley and the starter motor, as well as changing of the fluids. The front and rear brake discs were also replaced and EBC brake pads were fitted, while the headlights, battery and ignition coil were also renewed. Prior to this, SG Motorsport carried out a major service including replacement of the cam belt in August 2010, the year before the car went into storage.
This Clio V6’s most recent MOT test was conducted on 8 February 2021 at 17,435 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories. Accompanying the car are its original handbook, service book, tool kit and locking wheel nut key, as well as invoices detailing its past maintenance.
This Renaultsport Clio V6 is a superb example of the celebrated mid-engined hot hatch. Offered for sale with low mileage and only three keepers from new, it benefits from a recent £6,000 overhaul by model specialist SG Motorsport, and will make a fantastic addition to any collection of modern classics.
