2004 PORSCHE 911 (996) GT3 RS

This Porsche 996 GT3 RS is a superb example of the renowned lightweight, track-focused 911, with low mileage and a substantial recent overhaul. It is powered by the 3.6-litre naturally aspirated flat-six ‘Mezger’ engine - officially producing 375bhp, but in reality likely north of 390bhp - coupled to a slick six-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows just 25,513 miles from new.

Taking the 996.2 GT3 as the starting point, the GT3 RS featured stiffer shock absorbers and progressive springs, as well as a polycarbonate rear window, the lightweight bucket seats, half roll cage and harnesses from the Clubsport package, and a carbon-fibre bonnet and rear wing. This particular car is also equipped with a notable brake upgrade to the Alcon floating bell discs and uprated pads, as fitted to the Porsche Open race series cars.

Just 682 examples of the 996 GT3 RS are understood to have been built, making it one of the rarest ‘Rennsport’ Porsches ever. Of these, 140 are recorded as right-hand drive cars, with 113 having been officially imported into the UK. This particular car was first registered in May 2004, and it has just one previous registered keeper from new, who owned it until December 2005. Since then, it has been in the collection of its second private owner, and has remained a low-mileage 911. It was off the road between 2011 and 2019, but has recently been put through a thorough £15,000 recommissioning service.

Its bodywork is in very good condition, with flush shut lines and consistent panel gaps, and there is a clear HPI on file for peace of mind. The seller reports that its Carrara White paint presents well, and that the bonnet and front bumper have been repainted in the past to rectify stone chips. Today, there is some slight lifting of the finish on the composite bonnet, so this would benefit from being refreshed in due course.

Both the front and rear towing eye covers are missing, which suggests it has been enjoyed as intended on a few track days - where fitment of the eyes prior to circuit driving is usually mandatory. However, there are no signs of abuse, with the light lenses appearing free of chips and cracks, and only a few nicks visible in the vinyl body decals. The colour-coded 18-inch alloy wheels present well, and are accented by yellow brake calipers.

In the cabin, the Clubsport specification Recaro bucket seats are trimmed in the original Nomex and are in excellent condition. Both the standard blue seat belts and six-point harnesses are currently fitted, ready for road or track. The steering wheel and gear lever gaiter are trimmed in Alcantara with blue stitching, which shows only light wear in line with the age and mileage. There is also some wear and sticker residue on the passenger side of the centre console. While it is a thrilling car to use on a circuit, it is also usable on longer road trips, with a carpeted boot lining, air-conditioning, and original stereo.

Having not been used on the road between 2011 and 2019, it was treated to a comprehensive service and overhaul at Porsche specialist JZM last year at 25,311 miles. The engine oil and filter were changed, along with the gearbox oil, brake fluid, and spark plugs. Its drive belt was also replaced, along with the fuel pump, and a track control arm.

All of the suspension components were given a thorough clean and inspection, all four brake discs were replaced, the calipers were refurbished, and brake pads were renewed throughout. The wheels were refurbished, new tyres were fitted, the rear screen and wiper were replaced, and a new battery was installed. Finally, a full four-wheel alignment was carried out, plus a thorough road test. The total cost of all of this work came to £15,687.

Its last MOT test was on 2 December 2019 at 25,335 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. The wheels are shod in fresh Porsche N4-rated Michelin Pilot Sport tyres in size 235/40 ZR18 at the front and 295/30 ZR18 at the rear, which are in virtually as-new condition having covered only 200 miles.

While the car has been looked after and serviced by JZM Porsche during the seller’s ownership, the history has been misplaced while the car was off the road, so only the most recent work detailed above is on file. However, the specialist is endeavouring to put together evidence on previous work for the seller.

This Porsche 996 GT3 RS is a wonderfully engaging driver’s car, with purity and precision that is increasingly hard to find among modern supercars. It is presented in very good cosmetic condition, and benefits from a substantial recent spend at a recognised marque specialist to ensure that it is on-the-button. If you have always wanted one of these very rare RS models in your collection, then now is your chance.
