2004 AUDI RS6 AVANT PLUS

This Audi RS6 Avant Plus is a very rare and powerful practical family car, presented in good condition throughout and with relatively low mileage. As one of the limited-edition ‘Plus’ models, its 4.2-litre twin-turbocharged V8 produces a substantial 473bhp, coupled to a five-speed ZF automatic transmission. The odometer shows 78,400 miles.

Building on the standard RS6 of the time, the rare ‘Plus’ variant – limited to 999 units – not only featured a more powerful engine, but was also equipped with a sports exhaust. The ride height was also lowered by 10mm, and firmer shock absorbers were installed for the Dynamic Ride Control suspension. It was fitted with substantial cross-drilled brake discs, with eight-piston callipers at the front. The Plus model could accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.4 seconds, and go on to a limited top speed of 174mph.

An original UK car, first registered in September 2004, this RS6 Plus has just four previous owners. The seller acquired the car from a Collecting Cars auction earlier this year, but is now offering it for sale to fund other projects. The previous keeper cherished the car for more than 10 years, covering some 50,000 miles in his ownership.

Today, the bodywork presents in good condition, with flush shut lines and consistent panel gaps. Since acquiring the car earlier this year, the vendor has treated it to detailing work to remove some of the minor parking dings in the paint, and it now presents very well. There is some bubbling of the paint protection film around the front wheel arch and bumper – but the underlying paint is unaffected. The factory-fitted RS silver door mirror casings were removed by the seller to give the car a darker exterior appearance. It rides on the correct set of 19-inch five-arm alloy wheels finished in anthracite, which have been refurbished and are pristine.

In the cabin, handsome tan leather contrasts pleasingly with the dark exterior, and remains in very good order, having just been thoroughly cleaned and refurbished. The rest of the interior trim also looks smart, with no damage or defects. It is equipped with an electric sunroof, which is in good working order. The car received a full health check in June 2020, when all of the electrics and switchgear was tested - and no faults were found. A plaque just ahead of the gear shifter confirms this as car number 309 of just 999 built for European markets.

Mechanically, this RS6 Plus is in fine fettle, and has a comprehensive service history with all the appropriate paperwork. Since purchasing this Audi in September, the vendor has had the car serviced, so that it remains in excellent running order, with a four-wheel alignment session also carried out.

Prior to this, it had a full service at Audi and RS specialist Camspec in West Sussex, in June 2020 at 76,990 miles. This consisted of a full inspection and oil change, renewal of both front rear lower arms, replacement of the auxiliary fuel pump and centre exhaust sleeve, and fresh brake fluid. The Dynamic Ride Control system and gearbox were also inspected to ensure smooth operation. The brakes were noted as 40% worn, and the tyres noted as having 6mm of tread.

Prior to this, Camspec also serviced the car in August 2017, at 76,832 miles, when the ribbed cam belt was replaced, along with the water pump, front oil seal, coolant pipe and seals, and the thermostat. It also received a new high-level brake light, front and rear wipers, aerial mast, and rear view mirror. The brake fluid was replaced, the gearbox rear drive flange prop seals were renewed, and new oil cooler pipes were also fitted. The alloy wheels were fully refurbished at this time.

The most recent MOT test was on 17 June 2020 at 76,995 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. It had previously failed the day before, but the minor defects and advisories listed were immediately rectified by Camspec as detailed above. The wheels are shod in Kumho tyres all round, which are in great condition with 6mm of tread remaining.

All of the original supplied books and accessories remain with the car, along with two flip keys. An additional anti-hijack security system is also fitted. In a retrospective feature on the model in 2014, MSN Cars concluded: “The memory you draw from the RS6 Plus is one of sheer speed coupled with a deep ability to control it”.

This Audi RS6 Avant Plus is a very rare ‘super estate’, presented in original and unmolested condition, and with a handsome factory specification. It has never been abused or tracked, with the previous owner using it as his primary family transport for much of that period, and keeping it maintained by RS specialist Camspec. A superb modern classic that is very practical and yet also great fun to drive; this is an opportunity not to be missed.
