2003 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (MK4) R32

This Mk4 Volkswagen Golf R32 is an impressive hot hatch, which is presented in a pleasing colour combination and in excellent condition for its age. On lifting the bonnet, you are met by the R32’s party piece, the 3.2-litre VR6 engine, which produces 240bhp and 236ft-lb of torque. This is mated to a six-speed manual transmission and the 4Motion all-wheel drive system, allowing this Golf to sprint from 0-60mph in a still-impressive 6.6 seconds. The odometer displays 67,190 miles from new.

Introduced in 2002 to widespread praise; the Mk4 R32 more than made up for the M4 GTi’s somewhat lacklustre reception. Featuring some cosmetic changes including deeper front and rear bumpers, side skirts and a set of 18-inch OZ alloy wheels, what really set the R32 apart was its 3.2-litre VR6 engine and Haldex all-wheel drive system.

This example was first registered on 23 May 2003 by VW dealers Corkills of Wigan, and was kept by its first owner for 10 years, during which time it was routinely serviced by Gilbert Lawton, Macclesfield.

The car was then sold to its next owner, who used it sparingly for seven years, before it was sold to the current owner via the trade. Now the car’s third private owner from new, the current keeper has enjoyed this R32 for the last six months.

Relatively reserved in appearance by modern standards; this hot hatch’s bodywork remains in excellent order, and the seller is not aware of any previous damage. While it is believed that the Diamond Black pearl-effect paintwork may have been resprayed at some stage in the car’s life, it presents very well. There are some general age-related marks, including light scratches and some stone chips at the front of the vehicle. However, the paintwork has a glossy appearance overall, and has recently been treated to an extensive clean and polish by Topaz Detailing in Bristol.

This R32 rides on the correct set of 18-inch ‘Artiso’ alloy wheels, which are in great shape, having been refurbished prior to the car’s sale to its current owner. Behind, a set of blue painted brake callipers provide a further hint towards this car’s performance capabilities.

In the cabin, this R32’s heated full-leather sport seats show only modest signs of wear, and while there are creases and discolouration on the driver’s bolsters, this is commensurate with the car’s age and mileage. The interior plastics, trim and light headlining all present very well, as do the black leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob – although the latter’s finish is wearing away slightly.

Specified with optional cruise control, this performance hatchback still features its original ‘Gamma’ radio cassette player with 6-disc CD changer. Other factory-fitted equipment includes air conditioning, electric heated door mirrors, and a dimming rear-view mirror. The seller reports that there are no faults with the car’s controls, buttons or electrics, and that there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

As evidenced by its extensive service records, this Golf R32 has been well-maintained over the years by both VW main dealers and specialists. Its most recent general service was carried out in June 2020, when all of the brake discs and pads were also replaced.

Having been spared any extensive modification, the car is largely standard, save for a Milltek rear exhaust silencer, and a set of aftermarket coil-overs, which were fitted in 2009.

This Golf’s last MOT test was conducted on 17 June 2020 at an indicated 67,183 miles, resulting in a clean first-time pass. All four alloy wheels are shod in Bridgestone Potenza tyres in size 225/40 R18, which appear to be in good condition and have plenty of tread remaining.

This R32 will be accompanied by its stamped service book and a detailed file of receipts, as well as the correct R32-badged leather document wallet.

Arguably now considered a true modern classic, the Mk4 Volkswagen Golf R32 offers impressive performance, subdued styling and solid build quality. Presented in smart condition both inside and out, this three-owner manual example is ready to take to the road to impress its next owner, and will make an excellent addition to any collection of notable hot hatches.
