2003 MASERATI 4200 COUPE CAMBIOCORSA

This 2003 Maserati 4200 Coupe is a very smart example of the Giugiaro-style grand tourer, presented in a rare and handsome factory colour scheme, and with excellent service history. It is powered by the characterful Ferrari-built 4.2-litre F136R V8 engine, producing 385bhp, with rear-wheel drive via the six-speed Cambiocorsa automated-manual transmission with paddle shifters. The odometer now shows 60,953 miles from new.

First registered on 9 April 2003, this sleek four-seater remained with its original owner until 2015. Between 2007 and early 2015, the car was in Northern Ireland, and was serviced by Maserati dealer Charles Hurst during its time there. It was subsequently bought by the previous owner, who enjoyed around 13,000 miles on the road, before selling this 4200 on Collecting Cars in May 2020. The buyer in that auction – the third private owner from new – has since put the car through a full inspection, had a new clutch fitted, and has driven it sparingly over the last month. He is offering it for sale again to fund other purchases.

The deep metallic Verde Goodwood paint is in good condition, and is befitting of the flowing, elegant bodywork. The only blemishes of note are some small stone chips, which have been touched in, and a chip on the windscreen – however this is out of the driver’s field of vision. The original 18-inch 15-spoke alloy wheels are generally in good order, but may benefit from refurbishment work to bring them up to a higher standard.

Inside, luxurious tan leather features throughout, covering the seats, dashboard, centre console, and upper door cards. Both front seats are also heated, with two memory positions available to the driver. The swathes of hide are complemented by brown piping on the dashboard, and beige carpets and floor mats, all of which are in good condition.

There is some light wear to the driver’s seat, steering wheel, and centre console, which is commensurate with the mileage, and the original Maserati script is missing from the ashtray cover. There are a few small blemishes on the control buttons, but they seem to be largely free of the usual sticky plastic coating. As well as being equipped with the desirable Skyhook adaptive suspension system, this 4200 Coupe was also specified from the factory with satellite navigation and xenon headlights.

Mechanically, this car is in fine fettle, testament to the work carried out by Maserati dealers and specialists throughout its lifetime. In June 2020, it had a visit to Autoshield Maserati in Manchester for an inspection, and was fitted with a replacement clutch, a new rear wheel bearing, and an ABS sensor. Prior to this, it had a major service at PK Supercars in November 2019 at 60,491 miles, during which all fluids were changed, and the clutch wear was recorded at 28.5%.

Services before this were carried out in May 2016 at 54,958 miles, and in May 2015 at 47,049 miles. In addition, during the previous ownership, all suspension wishbones were replaced, as well as the primary catalytic converter, the pump and relay for the hydraulically operated F1 transmission, and one of the Skyhook shock absorbers.

The Coupe’s last MOT test was carried out on 1 May 2019 at 60,481 miles, resulting in a clean pass with no advisories. Due to the six-month extension in place, the next MOT test is not due until 30 October 2020. All four tyres were replaced three or four years ago, with 6mm of tread remaining on each, with Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres on the front wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rubber on the rear axle.

The car is accompanied by all of the original books and literature, including the owner’s manual and stamped guarantee and maintenance record, as well as a raft of old service receipts and invoices. The original tool kit and storage bag, both keys, and the radio code card are also present.

This Maserati 4200 Coupe Cambiocorsa is an exotic modern classic, and an exemplar of stylish Giugiaro design. These cars are not frequently spotted on UK roads, so this sporting V8 is sure to attract admiring glances – especially in its rare and sophisticated factory colour scheme. The 4200 Coupe is an enjoyable and practical GT, and is ready for many more miles with its next custodian.
