2003 LOTUS ELISE 111S

This Lotus Elise 111S with its evocative ‘Gold Leaf' racing livery is a superb tribute to Colin Chapman’s engineering philosophy, which took the company to seven Formula One World Constructors’ Championships titles. Powered by a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated inline-four, its peak 160hp output is delivered to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. This Elise benefits from a detailed maintenance history and it remains in very good order throughout.

First registered on 20 January 2003, there are three previous registered keepers on the log book. It was acquired by the vendor six months ago.

The red and white finish accented with gold – which is a vinyl wrap completed by Vinyl Image in 2018 – looks superb. The rear diffuser has also recently been refinished in satin black. It rides on multi-spoke anthracite wheels, which present as well as the bodywork with no signs of kerbing.

The car’s bodywork remains standard apart from the fitment of a front splitter. The wheels have also been pushed out slightly with the addition of wheel spacers. It has a Hurricane induction kit installed, as well as Larini exhaust system.

The spartan interior continues the no-frills theme. Trimmed with carbon-effect leather and black Alcantara, the cabin is in very good order. The steering wheel has been re-trimmed in Alcantara, with a race-inspired 12 o'clock band in red, but otherwise it remains all original. There are some light scuffs on the driver’s sill cover as well as some minor marks to the steering wheel cowl around the key barrel. The vendor also points out that the air-conditioning is not currently working and that the heater only works on the third speed setting.

Serviced by Lotus specialist Chris Foulds in July 2020 at 30,798 miles, this consisted of an ‘A’ service which includes the replacement of the usual oil and filters, as well as the brake fluid. At this point the cam belt was also replaced, along with a new handbrake cable.

The last MOT was completed on 14 August 2020 at 30,893 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories. The Yokohama AD07 LT2 tyres were fitted in June 2020 and remain in excellent condition.

Supplied with its original Lotus handbooks and stamped service record, there is also a bundle of paperwork that includes most of the past MOT certificates, the original vehicle order form, and several invoices for past service work. The appropriate cherished registration ‘S2 WHX’ is also included in the sale.

This Lotus Elise 111S is a great example of one of the consummate lightweight sports cars. Finished in a wonderful ‘Type 49’ tribute livery, it stands out from many other examples available, while sacrificing none of the driver engagement or excitement that makes the Elise so impressive. In fact, the subtle modifications to this particular car mean it offers an even more vocal and dynamic edge. This is a hugely entertaining modern classic that would make a fine addition to any collection, and it is ready to drive and enjoy on your favourite roads.
