2002 RENAULT CLIO V6

This 2002 Renault Clio V6 Phase 1 is an uncompromising mid-engined hot hatch presented in superb condition, having evidently been cherished by its previous owners. Equipped with a 227bhp 3.0-litre V6 and a six-speed manual transmission, the rear-wheel drive Clio V6 can still hold its own with contemporary ‘everyman’ performance hatchbacks. This example has covered 55,301 miles from new.

The Phase 1 model was assembled by Tom Walkinshaw Racing in Sweden, and this car is one of just 223 UK examples finished in Iceberg Silver (and is number 500 of the 1,513 built). First registered in November 2002, the car has five former keepers from new and was acquired by the vendor last year.

Many of these Clios have been stripped out to use as track toys - or worse, crashed and repaired - but this is an original and unmolested example. The only modifications from factory specification are the addition of a Quicksilver stainless steel exhaust, and the yellow painted brake calipers.

Its Iceberg Silver paintwork looks superb in the photos, and the Collecting Cars team found it to be in very good condition even upon close inspection. We spotted a handful of minor stone chips at the front as you would expect, and one small area of stress cracking in the paint around the nearside rear wheel arch - which is shown in the media gallery.

The underside of the car is also in excellent condition. The door, bonnet and boot shuts and jambs are in great shape, as are all of the rubber seals. It appears to be a genuinely superb example with original factory paintwork.

In the cabin, the sport seats still have their original upholstery in the factory combination of dark blue leather and suede, embroidered with Renault Sport logos in the seat panels. All of the rest of the interior trim is in superb condition, and the steering wheel benefits from having been professionally re-trimmed. The metal plaque between the seats confirms that this is car number 500 of the total production run.

At the back of the car, the original jacking kit is still in place. The small boot area behind the engine is supplemented by a front storage compartment, as well as a net-enclosed shelf behind the seats.

This is a mechanically sound car that is ready to thrill on the road. Its first five stamped services were all at Renault main dealers. It has had cambelt renewals at 30,000 miles and 53,000 miles - the latter during the 2015 service, which also included a new auxiliary belt and water pump. An advisory regarding play in a track control arm ball joint was rectified in 2016 with a replacement part. In 2017, the ignition coil was renewed, and last year it was given an oil service by Rodney Garages in Forest Hill, London.

The car has a very impressive MOT history, with the last test in August 2018 at 54,887 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. It has just been fitted with a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, in size 215/45 ZR17 at the front and 235/45 ZR17 at the rear.

Accompanied by all of the original literature, including the owner’s manual and the stamped service booklet, as well as numerous invoices, this Renault Clio V6 is a terrific modern classic in great condition. It is ready to be taken out on sunny days by a new owner and enjoyed straight away.
