2002 RENAULT CLIO V6 PHASE 1

This 2002 Renault Clio V6 Phase 1 is a great example of the riotous mid-engined hot hatch, which has had only two keepers from new. Powered by a 227bhp 3.0-litre V6 which drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, the Clio V6 can accelerate from 0-60mph in around 6.2 seconds, meaning it still impresses even some 20 years after it was first launched. The odometer displays just 20,766 miles.

As a Phase 1 model, this Clio V6 was built by Tom Walkinshaw Racing in Sweden, and is number 725 of the 1,513 produced. An original Hong Kong-market car, it was first registered in March 2002, and has had only two keepers from new, with the seller having enjoyed the last 14 years behind the wheel.

Today, the bodywork remains in excellent shape, with straight panels and no evidence of any prior accident damage. Believed to have been either partly of fully resprayed in the past, the Iceberg Silver paintwork is described by the seller as being in good overall condition, with a few marks including stone chips on the nose and minor scratches on the rear bumper, in line with the car’s road use. The exterior trim and light lenses present well, and the original tail lights have been replaced with Phase 2 units. This Clio rides on its original set of 17-inch, 16-spoke alloy wheels, which have been refinished in dark metallic grey and present well, with a few small chips on their paintwork and touched-in kerb scratches on the rim of the rear driver’s-side wheel.

Inside, the cabin still features its original trim and upholstery, and is in good order for its age. Both of the seats are clad in Dark Blue suede with Dark Blue leather bolsters, which are creased and slightly worn, but generally present well. While there are some minor marks on the steering wheel, this is commensurate with the car’s age, and the dashboard is very smart, though there are scuffs on the silver plastic radio surround. The seller reports that there are no faults with any of the controls, switches or other electrical items, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

This thrilling hot hatch’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in January 2021 at approximately 20,200 miles. A minor service, this included an engine oil and filter change, while the fuel pump and cambelt were changed in 2020 at around 18,000 miles.

During the current keeper’s ownership, a number of other items have also been attended to, including replacement of various suspension bushes and the air-conditioning pump.

The car’s last roadworthiness inspection was conducted in 2020, which it passed without any warnings or advisories. The wheels are fitted with Goodyear EfficientGrip tyres in size 205/50 R17 at the front and 245/45 R17 to the rear. All four are in good condition and have plenty of tread remaining; however, they date to 2011 and as such may benefit from replacement in the near future.

Accompanying the vehicle are its original owner’s manual and handbook, as well as its service book and tool kit.

This Phase 1 Renault Clio V6 is an idiosyncratic modern classic hot hatch, the likes of which no manufacturer is likely to produce again.
