2002 MERCEDES-BENZ CL600 (C215)

This Mercedes-Benz CL600 is a rare and well-equipped luxury grand tourer, presented in very good order, and fresh from a major service. It is powered by the 5.8-litre ‘M137’ naturally aspirated V12, officially producing 367hp and 391lb-ft of torque, coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission. The odometer shows just 62,453 miles from new, making this a relatively low-mileage example.

First registered on 16 September 2002, this coupe version of the S-Class has just two previous registered keepers on the log book. The second owner acquired the car in 2018, and is a late family member of the seller, whose name it was transferred to in June 2020. The mileage is likely to increase very slightly during the auction as the car is in use.

Much like the S-Class of the same era, the CL-Class was a technological tour de force, equipped with a raft of cutting-edge safety and convenience systems. It was fitted as standard with the hydraulic Active Body Control (ABC) system, to keep the car planted and level even in fast corners.

The seller reports that the bodywork and paint are in excellent condition. The front, rear and flanks have just been repainted to rectify minor blemishes and stone chips around the bumpers, wings and wheel arches; however, this was not a full respray. The remainder of the body is believed to wear its original factory coat. Some minor imperfections are still present, including a few small chips on the bonnet, but overall this car presents superbly. It rides on the original five-spoke 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, which are in great shape.

Turning to the interior, this CL600 benefits from a superb specification that includes wonderfully comfortable heated and ventilated front seats, which have full electric adjustment, memory settings, and pulse massage functions. The black Nappa leather is excellent condition throughout, with no significant wear or discolouration. There are some light scuffs around the plastic of the driver’s seat base, and very minor marks on the trim in other places, but in general it boasts a very smartly presented cabin.

The factory specification includes cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, soft-close doors, a powered boot lid for automatic opening and closing, a glass tilt-and-slide sunroof, and an automatic rear window blind. There are also auto-dimming rear-view mirrors and bi-xenon headlights.

This Mercedes-Benz is fresh from a major ‘B service’ carried out in August 2020 at 62,155 miles. The engine oil and filter were renewed, along with additional items including the replacement of all 24 spark plugs with coil insulators, the air filter, fuel filter, and the cabin filters. The gearbox was also serviced, with its oil and filter also replaced with genuine OEM fluid. New rear brake discs and pads were fitted. Both rear boot lid gas struts were replaced, along with a new powered hinge on the right-hand side, and new C-pillar seals. Four new tyre pressure sensors were installed, and a full wheel alignment was carried out.

The car also received routine services in 2019 and 2018, with the former includes new front brake discs and pads, and lower front suspension arms and ball joints.

The most recent MOT test was carried out on 24 August 2020 at 62,314 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with the tester noting only the presence of factory-fitted underbody panels. Its wheels are shod in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, in size 245/40 ZR19 at the front and 275/35 ZR19 at the rear. They are date-coded to 2017 and remain in good condition.

Accompanying this CL600 is the original owner’s manual, operating instructions, the COMAND user guide, and the telephone manual. The handbook for the Linguatronic system is also present, along with the original service record book.

This Mercedes-Benz CL600 is a superb modern classic that blends a powerful high-capacity engine with an immensely comfortable and refined driving experience. Its well-appointed cabin is a wonderful place in which to travel on long-distance road trips, but this car could also easily be put into service as a luxurious daily driver. The car is presented in very good order, with relatively low mileage, and will no doubt impress its next owner.
