2002 MERCEDES-BENZ BRABUS C3.8S

This Brabus C3.8S is a highly-original example of a rare-groove compact performance saloon based on the W203 Mercedes-Benz C320. Under the bonnet lies a bored-out, 3.8-litre version of the 3.2-litre M112 V6, now producing 300bhp and 291lb/ft of torque, all channelled to the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission. The odometer reads 62,851 miles.

First registered on 14 October 2002, this left-hand drive Brabus has been owned by the current vendor for around one year. It remains in original condition throughout, having been imported from Japan in 2020 and re-registered with the DVLA in February 2021.

Badged as car number 36, it is understood that only around 60 were built – despite a planned 100-car production run. The displacement increase to 3.8 litres comes courtesy of a customised crankshaft with a longer stroke, balanced piston rods, larger pistons and larger piston bore. Other technical highlights include custom camshafts, larger inlet and outlet valves in the cylinder head, a stainless steel high-performance exhaust system and modified ECU.

Finished in Neve White, this Brabus is believed to retain its original paintwork throughout. The front end is largely free of marks, though the front splitter – unique to this model – has a small impact crack, chips along the leading edge, and some ‘crazed’ hairline cracks. The unique design touches continue at the rear, with a vented rear splitter and dual-exit exhaust differentiating it from other W203s.

Some signs of discolouration are visible on the headlight lenses and side window trims, in line with the age of this C-Class, but overall the car remains in very good order. The original 19-inch Brabus alloy wheels are still fitted to this example, and would benefit from refurbishment to remedy surface corrosion visible to their diamond-cut finish.

Moving inside, the grey and black leather of the Brabus remains in excellent condition. All five seats present well, with only minor signs of creasing and minimal wear. Ruched leather features in the door cards, with no signs of wear to the door-mounted switchgear including the electrically adjustable seat controls. The hand grip on the left rear door does have some marks, and the gear lever is slightly worn, but in general the cabin is in superb order.

Such is the originality of this example that even the ‘Brabus New Millenium’ floor mats still accompany the car, with the vendor adding that all electrical accessories remain in full working order. An aftermarket Carrozzeria stereo system with navigation has been installed, and there are no warning lights illuminated on the dashboard.

The C3.8S was most recently serviced by the owner at 62,714 miles, with the engine oil and filter replaced during this time. The vendor adds that the service book was lost during importation, but the car appears to be in very good mechanical order.

The most recent MOT test was on 13 January 2021 at 62,716 miles. This was a first-time pass with zero advisories. Riding on a set of Yokohamas at the rear and Kormorans at the front, the vendor states that the front tyres are in as-new condition, while the rears have approximately 5mm of tread remaining.

Offering an unusual entry point into the world of German performance saloons, this Brabus C3.8S has both relatively low mileage and a high level of originality on its side. While it would be a smart addition to a collection of modern classics, it would make for an appealing and unusual daily driver or weekend toy.
