NO RESERVE: 2002 MAZDA RX-7 TYPE RB

This Mazda RX-7 Type RB is a highly original example of a renowned Japanese performance car, presented in very smart condition. It is powered by a 261bhp 1.3-litre sequential twin-turbocharged and twin-rotor 13B Wankel engine, driven through the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. The odometer shows 137,603km (85,502 miles) from new.

A ‘Series 8’ FD model that was offered only in the Japanese domestic market; this RX-7 features larger air intakes.to improve cooling, an adjustable rear wing, improved brakes. Various interior components were also upgraded to enhance comfort and convenience. Imported to the UK in 2018, the seller acquired the car in November that year.

Its bodywork presents in good order, with the photos below illustrating the flush shut lines and tight panel gaps all around the car. The Innocent Blue paint finish is also in great shape, with a smooth and even appearance across the panels. The seller notes a small scratch on the driver's door, and another minor blemish and dent in the wing mirror above it. There is some surface corrosion visible on the exhaust back box. The car rides on the correct 16-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, which are in superb condition.

In the cabin, the original black cloth is in impressive condition. There is modest wear to the bolsters and bases, and some fading of the fabric, but in general the interior presents very smartly. The plastics and other trim pieces are also in great shape, with the seller noting just one small crack in the passenger seat belt guide. Ahead of the driver is the original three-spoke Nardi steering wheel, and in the console there is a double-DIN Alpine CD changer and amplifier with MP3 playback. The seller reports that all of the switchgear and electrical items work as they should.

Significantly, this RX-7 is fitted with a replacement rotary engine, fitted in Japan at approximately 130,000km - so there is less than 8,000km on the new motor. A recent compression test is on file that evidences the engine’s strong condition. The car was serviced within the last year by the owner, an experienced amateur technician who also restores old cars and motorbikes with his father. The engine oil and filter were renewed, along with the air filter.

The brake pads were changed along with all four tyres eight months ago, and an offside rear ball joint was replaced around five months ago. The seller believes the nearside rear wheel bearing is in need of replacement as it has a slight hum - and a new bearing is supplied. It was previously serviced by the import company who brought the car into the UK in 2018.

Its first MOT test in the UK took place on 24 October 2019 at 135,630km, which resulted in a first-time pass with only one advisory about worn brake pads - though these were replaced shortly after the test as outlined above. The tyres are less than one year old and still have 7mm of tread. Accompanying the car is a file of Japanese service history, as well as its original handbook.

This Mazda RX-7 Type RB is a great example of a renowned Japanese performance car, which benefits from a new engine but is still in its stock specification. The Type RB is a late production model and undoubtedly a modern classic, and the seller reports that it drives and handles very well indeed. It has evidently been well cared-for, and would make a fun addition to any collection.
