2002 ALFA ROMEO SPIDER 2.0L TWIN SPARK

This Alfa Romeo Spider is a characterful and reliable modern classic, which benefits from a recent cambelt service, and is presented in good order. Under the bonnet is the 153bhp 2.0-litre inline-four Twin Spark engine, driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 114,266 miles from new.

As a later ‘Phase 2’ model, this Spider features the upgraded centre console, a revised instrument cluster and switch layout, and changes to the modular intake manifold of the Twin Spark engine.

An original UK-market car, this Alfa Romeo was first registered on 1 February 2002. There are five previous keepers on the log book, with the last recorded change taking place in January 2020.

Its bodywork is not believed to have ever suffered from accident damage to the panels, and it presents with flush shut lines. There is no record of any respray of the Grigio Chiaro paint in the history file, and the vendor believes it may well be original. Some obvious blemishes are present in the finish, commensurate with the age and mileage, including some scuff damage on the nearside front wing and bumper, some similar marks around the rear quarter, and general stone chips to the front end.

The car’s black soft top is reported to be in good condition, with no tears or holes in the material, though there is some slight bunching in the fabric around the rear window. As the photos show, the mechanism is working as it should. The car rides on 16-inch ‘teardrop’ alloys, which are generally sound, with just a few chips in the silver finish and some kerbing grazes on the nearside front wheel.

Stepping inside, the black leather upholstery is original, and it still presents very well for its age. There is the typical wear on the driver’s seat bolster that you would expect given the mileage, and some slight bunching of the leather on the seat base. Both door cards are in very good condition, as is the dashboard, while the steering wheel and gear knob have minor wear. Equipment includes electric windows, climate control, and an aftermarket Panasonic radio and CD player head unit. The only foible noted by the vendor is that the driver’s side window is reluctant to close again if opened fully.

The service history from 2007 to 2010 is not accounted for, but there are online MOT records that show the mileage accrual and indicate the condition during this period. More recently, there has been regular servicing over the last six years in particular, as shown in the summary below. Its last routine maintenance was in July 2020 at 113,622 miles, with a full service including replacement of the cambelt and water pump, carried out at Italia Autos in Walsall.

In September 2020, the car received new link bars and track rod ends, and around late 2019 it was also fitted with a new steering rack at 112,849 miles. Prior to this, another oil change service was carried out in June 2018 at 109,799 miles, including renewal of the brake fluid and cabin filter. The clutch was replaced in September 2012 at 105,173 miles.

The most recent MOT test was on 11 January 2021 at 114,260 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with only one advisory regarding a slight blow from the rear exhaust box. The car’s complete MOT history from April 2006 onwards is visible online, and there has never been any advisory or alert regarding rust or corrosion of any kind, which is surely a good indicator to its history and condition.

Accompanying the car is the original stamped service record, plus the owner’s manual and other dealer-supplied literature. A Certificate of Conformity is also present, plus a file of old service and maintenance invoices, and three keys.

This Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0 Twin Spark is a smart and eminently usable example of the millennium-era roadster. While the next owner may wish to smarten up a few of the cosmetic blemishes in due course, the recent maintenance means that it is running and driving well, and would make for a great modern classic cruiser to enjoy straight away.
