2002 ALFA ROMEO GTV CUP - 72 OF 155

This Alfa Romeo GTV Cup is a superb example of the limited-production Italian sports car, benefiting from over £4,500 of expenditure on a recent mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment. It is powered by the legendary ‘Busso’ 3.0-litre V6, producing 218 bhp and 265lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 59,290 miles from new.

Built to commemorate the brand’s one-make GTV Cup race series, only 419 cars were made in total, with this example being number 72 of the 155 rare V6 right-hand drive cars that remain on the road. First registered on 29 November 2002, the enthusiast vendor has owned and maintained this UK-market example for nearly two years.

Finished in vibrant red, the paintwork on this example has benefited from a recent respray of the original plastic body kit parts, which had faded slightly, and now presents with a deep uniform shade across the car. A handful of light stone chips and superficial scratches are present in the paint finish. All GTV Cup cars left the factory with a Zender aero bodykit, adding aggression to the Alfa’s sleek lines, and the panels and lines on this car remain in good order, with only a minor hairline crack visible up close on the front splitter and scuff marks (not visible from standing height) under the front splitter.

This example retains its 17-inch original GTV Cup silver chrome ‘teledial’ alloy wheels, which have minimal marks or scratches. The car has a Dual Wizard cat-back exhaust system to unlock extra engine noise and has had the engine bay detailed in red/black, but otherwise the car remains original.

Inside, the Alfa’s driver-centric interior presents in very good order. A model-specific dashboard plaque, Alfa Romeo-branded kickplates and GTV carpets add a touch of exclusivity, while the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake grip are free of damage. Minimal wear is visible on the driver’s side outer seat bolster, and there is a chip in the plastic on the rear part of the centre console. Otherwise, the cabin remains looking very smart even after nearly 20 years. The vendor adds that everything remains in full working order, including the car’s original Clarion head unit and CD changer, with no dashboard warning lights illuminated.

This Alfa Romeo has been well maintained to date, with the most recent service completed in May 2019 by marque specialist NJS at 57,629 miles. At this service interval, the cambelt and water pump were replaced, along with the engine oil, brake fluid and coolant. The vendor adds that another service will be completed during the auction at Alfa Romeo specialist Go-Italia of Maidstone, ready for handover to the next owner.

This example has also had a raft of preventative maintenance jobs undertaken, including the replacement of the original oil cooler with a specialist upgrade from Autolusso. The rear heated screen relay modification, to fix a known flaw relating to the fuse box in this model, has also been done.

Both the front and rear subframes have been shot blasted and repainted, with a complete suspension overhaul carried out on both axles. Dynax anti-corrosion protection has also been applied under the chassis, behind both bumpers, around the fuel tank enclosure, inner wings, inner sills and outer sills. The rear brake calliper’s have been professionally reconditioned and adorn new rear discs, and the rear brake hoses have also been upgraded with steel brake lines.

The most recent MOT test was on 4 August 2020 at 59,059 miles. This was a pass at the second time of asking, following correct re-fitment of both front tyres. Wearing Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres all round, these have approximately 4mm of tread remaining on the front axle and 5mm at the rear.

Offering a blend of Italian style, rarity and the sonorous engine note of its ‘Busso’ V6, this Alfa Romeo GTV Cup has been very well maintained to date. While its low mileage would appeal to any collector, it remains a turn-key car for the next enthusiast to enjoy on road, track or long-distance trip.
