2001 VOLKSWAGEN LUPO GTI

This VW Lupo GTI is a superb junior hot hatch, which is presented in good condition throughout and has benefitted from a mechanical overhaul within the last few years. Under the bonnet sits a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated inline-four engine producing a healthy 123bhp, coupled with an engaging five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 76,050 miles from new.

First registered in September 2001, this Lupo GTI has four previous keepers on the log book. It was acquired by its current owner two-and-a-half years ago.

To the best of the owner’s knowledge, this Lupo has never sustained any bodywork damage nor undergone any repairs, presenting with even shut lines throughout. The black paintwork is in good order and is believed to be entirely original, with just some stone chips and light swirl marks, commensurate with the age and mileage. It rides on the original 15-inch six-spoke alloy wheels, which have only some minor damage to the faces of the rims. The vendor reports a small chip is present on the windscreen, and also that the driver’s door hinge makes a slight clicking sound, which may simply be the pins or bearings needing attention.

Moving inside, this Lupo is upholstered with its original grey GTI cloth, which remains in excellent condition and is accented with red seatbelts. The key contact points on the three-spoke steering wheel, handbrake and manual gear knob all appear in good order, with the vendor reporting only some age-related wear to the door handles and electric window switches. However, everything is reported to work as it should, with no known electrical issues and no warning lights present on the dashboard.

The last scheduled maintenance was undertaken in February 2020 at 70,390 miles, where technicians at VW specialists RCS Motors in Belfast carried out a gearbox rebuild, fitting a new clutch release fork and bearing, and changing the transmission oil. Prior to this, in May 2019 at 69,264 miles, the car was given new coolant, an air-conditioning service, and headlamp realignment, while a new radiator and clutch kit were also fitted. The cambelt was last replaced in May 2016 at approximately 62,100 miles.

The most recent MOT test in Nothern Ireland was in December 2019, which noted a nearside brake calliper needing attention, which was replaced with a new part and is in full working order. The tyres have around 6mm of tread on the front axle and around 8mm on the rear axle.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original VW service book, numerous maintenance invoices and the full set of keys. The main key is not currently working remotely, so may need a replacement battery.

This VW Lupo GTI is great modern classic, combining robust build quality with peppy performance that makes it fun to drive without being brash or a handful to control. The car comes with a solid maintenance history, notably with lots of work done over the last few years in particular, and it is in good condition throughout. It would make a fun purchase for any enthusiast of small performance cars, ready to savour on weekend B-road blasts or even to use as a daily driver.
